Can you use your Tax Saver pass on the nightrider if the nightrider passes through the town you have your pass for?

I asked the driver why it was. He replied as my pass is government subside and the nightrider service is a private service.

Wasn't going to argue so just paid.

The bus was a BE bus and all on the BE page says is
Free Travel passes issued by Department of Social and
Family Affairs are not valid on Nightrider services.

I pay nearly 2000 for my pass you would think it would be included.

Dublin bus allow annual pass holders to use their passes on nitelink services and isn't nitelink a private company.

Very poor if you ask me.

I'll drop them a mail and ask for the official reason.

The bus is a BE bus. I would have presumed the driver is also.

Not as if BE are losing out on money since it is a tax saver issued ticket. They still get the full annual amount

How is a monthly or annual ticket bought by a self employed, or personally by an employee different to a taxsaver ticket?

Dublin bus/ IE tickets are the same

Commuter tickets are valid for unlimited travel on all BE scheduled services. But are not valid for travel on sightseeing tours, special event services or any other BE services not detailed in the published timetables. I think You can use this on the nightrider service.

What you have is an annual ticket and not a travel pass issued by the Social Welfare.

I assume that you can't tell the difference between an annual pass bought on the taxsaver scheme and one that is not? At the end of the day, BE should be getting the same money and it's the Government who pick up the tab on the tax subsidy.

Nightriders are scheduled services and it's very unfair that these are not covered by annual ticket holders. Nobody would expect tours or special services to be covered but night services should be.

It states tax saver on the card.

I think BE regard the Nightrider as a special service - it is not specified in the NTA contract, unlike the Dublin Bus Nitelink service which is. It is then not subsidised and as such they are entitled to apply whatever rules they wish.

However, I think it is a bit narrow-minded to be honest.

No difference in the tickets or conditions - I think they just used that term as a generic one for the product.

Fair enough but it's not a subsidised ticket as the driver stated. BE still get the same amount of money as the person who doesn't use the taxsaver scheme.

The Nightrider really only operate into the Dublin commuter belt and should be included in the scheme. It would accommodate late workers as well as those who want to socialise.

    Tax saver comments
Certain buses are restricted under the Taxsaver ticket and this includes the nightrider services.

Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann are separate companies and have different terms and conditions.

I asked them why that is the case and got this reply
There are a number of services that the Taxsaver ticket is not available on and the Nightrider is one of them, unfortunately.

Can non-taxsaver annual travel passes be used on nightrider?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,283 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

They are using the term "taxsaver" generically Thomas.

They mean all monthly and annual tickets.

Definitely a case of Broadstone discharging a 12 bore into its own foot.
I'm pretty certain that Nightrider services are not exactly full to the brim so,as ChrisD sez,it's a no-brainer to entice annual ticket holders to use it to the full.

Bus Éireann needs to remove this restriction-YESTERDAY.

    Its a pity they don't!

I reckon my taxsaver pass has saved me a couple of hundred from nitelink journies home!

It is a disgrace that they don't include the nightservice with the monthly or yearly tickets. It is bad enough that they are so expensive, are point to point only and can't be linked up with the luas or Dublin Bus.

Just got a mail from BE

Annual Taxsaver tickets only will be accepted on Bus Éireann Nightrider services from Friday 23rd September.

Excellent. Makes perfect sense that night buses should be included in the yearly tickets. Thank you to all concerned. Shows you what complaining can do.
