Why no Irish stations showing the rugby union matches?

Surprised to see that none of the Irish TV stations were showing the Ireland vs Scotland rugby union match yesterday.

    Why not?

Sure RTE were probably showing The Magnificent Seven or Seven Brides for Seven Brothers or Lethal Weapon Part 4.

As for TV3 - Judge Judy maybe?

    It was on Setanta Ireland.

Probably because RTE waste so much of the licence fee that all they can afford to show are films from the 80s.

In fairness RTE deserve their own thread in Ranting & Raving.

It's down to a combination of two things:

    1) The ineptitude of RTE, they can't budget well enough to afford events

    2) The greed of the IRFU, their cosy arangement with Sky ripping off their supporters

Forget TV3, they are not Irish, they are just another ITV regional station aimed at the Irish viewer.

Jim Corr would be proud! IRFU, or Sky had no arrangement, cosy or otherwise, for this match, because it was the SRU (the host nation) who get to negotiate broadcasting rights.

Fair enough, my mistake there, just leaves us with RTE's ineptitude so.

Since the majority of viewers in ROI can get either BBC or/and Setanta it probably didn't make much difference. I posted on the rugby forum and asked if there was anyone who could not see this game and no-one replied.

The match was terrible yesterday. I'm glad RTE didn't waste license payers money on this practice match TBH

The ranting by some on this thread is laughable.

Im making a slight presumption here that the Rugby world cup will be FTA on saorview and freesat - i mean it is an international world tournament is it not? My hope is that between Saorview and freesat i will get to see all of the major matches - FREE - I dont enjoy going to the pub to see sports

Sic semper tyrannis - thus always to Tyrants

You'll get the WC on Freesat for sure, cos the English channels are showing it.

But I do think RTE have it FTA too.

AFAIK RTE have all Irish matches as well as opening game and all matches from QF's onwards. Setanta have all games.
