    Hi All,

Im after starting work with a northern Ireland based Company, only issue is i am based covering all the republic and they have given me a Northern Reg company car, is this legal, the car is on Northern Plates, tax in north and insured in north yet i am based in and living in south.

I just don't want to get pulled some day and as i am on a republic driving lics and live here get the car taken off me, i have searched websites for a proper answer but nothing i can find as yet,

    Thanks

I don't know for certain, but:

I think the law is different regarding work vehicles. For example, a lorry may be based in one country, but may travel all over europe.

Ultimately, if you do have an issue, it is your company's problem, and not yours. Maybe you could check it with them to be sure, but if they're happy, I wouldnt worry.

Can you live in the south and drive a northern car. The car is private own by this person thanks. What I'm asking is if I buy Northern reg car can I leave Northern plates on. Will my insurance cover this car. Thanks

You must import the car if you live in the south and you own the car and intend to drive it in the south.

No, the previous poster told you, you definitely can't do that. If you could do that, everyone would be doing that...

If you spend more than half the year living up in NIRL yes you can drive a NIRL car down here, if you don't, you can't.

How would BIK work? Presumably your salary is paid and taxed via the south

I’ve worked for U.K. based HQs and the cars have always been local Irish southern registrations- presumably because using U.K. reg isn’t allowed- it never even arose tbh. Might be different with the north though as against GB

Did you read the answer to your post and then mentally flip it to the exact opposite?
Well done, that takes some doing.

No LOL I just can't get my head round the neighbours beside me. They live here in the south with northern reg cars and work in North. Home every night. I'm confused how that works
    Thanks
PS they are from the North but live in South. They don't drive company cars befour you ask.

It’s a lot more expensive to lease a car here too (no surprise there) so they prob did what’s cheapest and do with their NI existing based staff for convenience

If they are from the North, they probably have UK driving licences with NI addresses and they lie through their teeth if / when stopped on the road...
