I'm considering buying the car in the link provided below.
I'm no expert on cars so any advice would be appreciated.
Anticipated mileage to be done in the car would be around 15k mils per annum.
Any more info needed from me just ask

Anything i should be looking out for?
    Thanks people:)

Well, Ford Diesel engines have been known to give injector problems, but I'm not sure if that is the case with the 90 bhp model.
Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) can also pack up, its a wearing part, but the mileage can vary when this happens. Usually around the 100k mark.
The Mondeo is a fairly reliable car in general but I would have thought that car is a tad on the expensive side, for what it is, but, I haven't checked out Done Deal to compare prices.

    Thanks a million:)

    Good sound advice.

I've offered him a lot less and he wasn't impressed.
I'm going to go see him again in a while and see can i get a better deal

Have 02 Mondeo a few years now, and they're a fairly reliable car.

As stated above Dual Mass Flywheels are a weakness in them. I had mine replaced recently and went with the solid flywheel instead. As my local indy mechanic said 'DMF was like someone trying to reinvent the wheel'

On the car pictured i'd say if you went with cash you would get that car for 6k no bother.

    What is "a lot less"?
What is the going rate on DD if you don't mind me asking?

I notice the NCT will be up in 7 months. Does the car come with a full service history and are they giving a warranty?
If no to the above, then this is your bargaining chip, then again ask yourself why they would not issue a warranty....
In any case, the dealer will not let something go for nothing - or make a loss. A Mondeo diesel will shift eventually at the right price.

    I offered him 5500 Cash

    Donedeal prices vary TBH:)

    Comes with a Service History

I actually bought a 06 mondel TDI earlier in the year for a very similar price and with similar mileage.

as cadaliac said the DMF and the Injectors are a common problem, another problem I had was the aux tensior pulley was worn and this caused a loud rough idle. The replacement of this pulley and associated tensioner will cost about 150 for the part and whatever your local mechanic charges for 2-3 hours.

Also keep an eye on the A/C (if this model has it) you should start the car from cold, and turn on the A/C and hear the fan kicking in after a few minutes and feel the blast of hot/cold air. if you don't then there is possibly a thermostat that is gone (again a common failure) and costs in the region of €240 to replace as you need to replace the entire fan..

however these are really only minor faults and are easily addressed, make sure you read up on all the tips in the "A Guide on buying Used Cars in Ireland" thread

How much did it cost to get your DMF replaced?

I had one of them for a year as a company car back in 2005/2006. The 90bhp isn't that slow in fairness, quite noisy though for a diesel of the mid 00s. The DMF failed on mine at 20k kms, I only had the car a few weeks, the chap who did the job before me had it from new, can't comment on his driving style. At the time it was done under warranty, the garage claimed it was a common fault. A few months later it lost power on the way to Kerry, a hose had come off the intercooler, apparently another common fault according to the garage. No other issues in the 25K miles I had it for.

15k miles may not require a diesel really, I used to average close to 50mpg but that was lots and lots of long spins, covering Munster with regular trips to Dublin and Meath too.

If you do want a Mondeo diesel the 115bhp or 130bhp version would be a much better option really.

I would recommend getting the 130 bhp version as when it comes to resale it will be easier to sell. The 90 bhp model is under powered imo. As cadaliac mentioned above these are all common problems and unlucky me has them all at once so looking at 2000-2500k bill! Good service history is a must!

Solid flywheel and clutch kit is around 600 for the parts, then add labour.

Was in around €700 parts & labour if I remember correctly. Can be lot more if you go through main dealer and DMF replacement. Whereas Solid Flywheel a better job altogether.

Need a large sized car like a Mondeo as we recently had our 3 rd Child.
Hence why we are looking at something like a Mondeo

Listen all cars have 'issues' but the Mondeo is grand and a pleasure to drive.

Don't mind lads saying you need the 130 bhp or this or that, mine is a 90 bhp TDDi and has plenty of poke and with all speed restrictions now sure where would you be going with something that will break the sound barrier.

Keep us updated on whether you purchase or not !!

It's my better half who'll be driving it more than me and she doesn't mind how fast it goes TBH.

Will post here when a decision is made.
Hoping to make it over to him later today

I have had an '05 115bhp hatchback for about the last 3 years. Great car, very reliable , comfortable, enough power if you need it.

The only major thing i have got done with it was the crankshaft pulley and tensioner. Apparently this is a known fault, they get noisy but dont break.

Am releaved to see that price, didnt think they would get even close to that money !!!!! Might consider selling mine once it gets through the NCT next month if thats the sort of money they are worth !
