I would have thought that RTE Two HD would at least have Dolby 2.0 audio with it's HD broadcasts. At the moment my tv shows "eng" (NICAM I guess) audio rather than Dolby 2.0 or Dolby 5.1 which shows up on most Freesat HD broadcasts. Anybody out there getting DD audio?

No and no plans that I know of.

DTT is using MPEG1 Layer II stereo audio not Nicam.

NICAM is stereo audio from the analogue days, using a combination of lossy audio compression and companding. Doesn't apply to "digital" broadcasts (while NICAM is, in actual fact, audio encoded in the digital domain, it is used only in broadcasts of video in the analogue domain for TV).

At present, audio on RTÉ Two HD is stereo MP2 only. With the addition of Multiplex 2 alongside an upgrade of RTÉ's playout and routing system then AC-3 Dolby Digital broadcasts may begin in the future. Would certainly be a welcome benefit for US import drama which makes use of DD5.1 soundtracks.

If they switch to AAC, it will be either for 5.1 films or for stereo at same quality but lower bit rate.

Dolby 2.0 isn't "HD Audio". It's just AC3 codec designed for cinema and DVD. It depends on MP2 or AAC bit rate whether the stereo (2.0) is better or worse than any particular Dolby 2.0

Same having an MP3 player vs Mini Disc ATRAC. It depends on the MP3 coding (CBR vs VBR etc) and bit rate as to if it's higher or lower quality.

DD 5.1 is pretty inefficient (AC-3 codec). They might transmit films in that or use 5.1 encoded in HE-AAC codec saving a lot of capacity.

Read the Nordig 2.2 spec. Make sure your set box/TV meets Nordig 2.2 or is Saorview certified.
