hi, my friend purchased 2006 vw tdi car from GUMTREE that was listed as a 1.9 tdi but hes now found out it’s the 2litre.
He now sure the guy listed it as a 1.9 to sell it at better price as the 2litre is not sought after as gives loads of trouble..
as it was english reg the seller had not the taxbook and would have to applied for..
    he's really gutted at this..
it’s a private sale..can anything be done in this case

Doubt it. Just hope he gets lucky with the 2.0L.

Nope, I can't believe someone bought a car without even looking at what engine was in it to be honest.

His problems are only beginning if he has not even seen the tax book (V5), he will not be able to VRT the car without the full V5 form and will take weeks or months to get one, that is assuming the seller was the actual owner and not selling a stolen car.

was advertised as a 1.9 tdi and being the sport model the 1.9 also had the 6 speed gearbox..
Its not as the seller advertised - its a 2litre and seller advertised as a 1.9

If a private seller has given you information which they know to be false and you are out of pocket as a result, you may be able to take legal action in another court against them. In this situation you may need to seek legal advice.

Personally,It seems like a very silly silly mistake to make anyway

As pointed out, it's tough sh1t for your buddy. He should have checked the car out properly before he parted with cash, not to mention he shouldnt have parted with anything without the V5.

He'll have to swallow that one and move on.

It's hard to Have sympathy for someone who buys a uk car without even doing a free cartell reg check to make sure plates match the car.

The 2.0 usually has a 2.0 badge, the engine looks and sounds different,I'm guessing your friend bought the first one he saw.

It's not like the seller told him it was a passat and it turned out to be a superb, this is more like advertising a silver car as being grey.

Your mate needs to accept that they did something monumentally stupid, next do a motorcheck report on the car, and obtain the reg documents from the seller

Then theres the issue of buying a uk reg car in eire from someone that probably isn't the registered keeper or a dealer, and how that's not legal, but thats another story

yes it had the 6 sp box and he got carried away with how good the car was done off and the seller telling him he had others coming to see it and that it wouldnt be about long that he just purchased it rather than lose out.. but he will know better in future..

Sounds like your friend didn't do any homework at all prior to buying. The 2.0 Tdi has a badge on the boot and also on the engine cover. The 1.9 Tdi is 5 speed only. Also a simple €28 motorcheck/cartell report would have told him the same.

Given his lack of knowledge and experience he could have bought a right dinger. Potential known problems of the 2.0 TDi might be the least of his worries if the car is clocked or is a cut n shut job. Unfortunately no comeback unless you can prove the seller deliberately mislead him. A lesson earned is a lesson learned as they say, an expensive one though.

Next time tell your friend he needs to look beyond the nice exterior packaging when buying a car.

Chalk it up to experience and sell her on as a 2.0 tdi if you don't want to keep her.

In fairness people there may be nothing wrong with the car at all and the OP may have a good experience until it comes time to change the car.

OP tell your friend to relax, he owns the car now so no point in I TOLD YOU SO approach.

They are a good car when they work and hopefully that shall be the case here and chalk the rest down to experience
