Would it be possible to pick up a good Rolex SubM for around the €3000 mark possibly buying in the US. After watching that luxury video Marcus posted I have an itching for picking one of these up.

3000 Euro converted to $ should be approx $4,200 @ $1.40 to the Euro,
so you will easily get one for that, are you looking for the M series specifically? or just any Sub with a date?

...I think the M series was the first year of the engraved rehaut, I doubt they will go for any less than $5000ish, could be wrong though
*Edit: Halfway through the Z series issue, mid 2007

.... If its for an investment my guess is that the no-date version is going to go up in value more, and within the next 5 years, but no good if its the date version that you want..... What good is a Rolex without being able to make infamous Rolex salute?)

Quick search of completed listings on Ebay (US) between $2500 and $4500 turns up a few that have sold recently:

    http://completed.shop.ebay.com/Watches-/14324/i.html?LH_Complete=1&LH_Price=2%2C500..4%2C500%40c&_trkparms=65%253A13%257C66%253A2%257C39%253A1&rt=nc&_nkw=rolex+submariner&_adv=1&_catref=1&_dcat=31387&_dmd=1&_fsct=&_in_kw=1&_ipg=50&_mPrRngCbx=1&_oexkw=&_okw=rolex+submariner&_sticky=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_sop=15&_sc=1

& a quick browse on the Rolex Forum:

    WUS:

A lot of the Rolex Forum and WUS sellers are offering CONUS deals only, dunno if they are flexable on that, but should be well within your budget ....customs notwithstanding
Should be easy enough to pick one up here in the US, although I think you could probably get one out of the EU for that, it might take a bit of searching though.

(Remember the golden rule if using Paypal.....DO NOT use your bank account, you have more comeback if you only allow funds to be paid from your credit card account and DO NOT lodge funds into your credit card account BEFORE you make the transaction, otherwise you have paid for it with YOUR money NOT the credit card companys money and so are not covered by the insurance offered by your credit card company, goes the same for anything you use your credit card for, especially holidays and flights)

Fantastic information M. What is your opinion on the Rolex movement in these watches? I like the black faced versions with black bezel. Out of those versions which would you consider to be the best for that price range? Thanks again for your knowledge.

Found this interesting article on the movement and repairing it.

Be super careful buying rolex. They are the most copied brand and often non riled parts are used etc.
The old "buy the seller not the watch " rule is essential.
Subby is a Iconic watch. May wear small for you so try one before buying

As far as the movement goes as far as I know they just lightly tweak what they have been using for years and years give it a new number, but its still basically all the same, bulletproof, reliable and accurate.

SS, Black Dial and Black Bezel is the only way to go.

From a collection point the no date will probably appreciate more than the date version, in the short-med term, just because they don't make them anymore.

From 2008 (I think) onward has the engraved rehaut - you know the ROLEX ROLEX ROLEX ROLEX that goes around the dial, some like it some don't, but as they are all newer it pushes the price up a little.

The model I would see as the best potential investment, and better looking, would be the one of the transitional models - a Luminova dial with sapphire crystal AND drilled lugs, these will also be rare as the combination of all three was not available for very long.

There are a lot of fakes out there on ebay etc. but they are usually easy to spot, I think the best option to keep an eye on the "for sale" section of the Rolex Forums and Watchuseek, I always reckoned that if anybody looks after their watches well its them, most of what goes up for sale is practically new looking and its easy enough to go over their previous posts/find out how long they have been signed up and other sales they have made, they operate a feedback systems for sales too.
The deals are usually good but if on the high side it would only be by a couple hundred and I would rather pay that extra 5%-10% for something that price and get something thats almost perfect with boxes, papers, hang tags, chrono certs....all in brand new condition (nothing worse than getting the box and its all peeling and dirty looking...Omegas are terrible for this)

If you have never tried one on go out to an AD look at the new ones, try em on find some used ones around the age you think you would like and give them a test drive, they weigh in at 40mm and wear small for that, and if you like huge watches you might be disappointed. It is a classic though I used to collect a lot of Omegas and where Omega collectors will gasp at the price of a vintage Flightmaster...and consider it a grail watch, it really only is the price of a decent second hand Sub.

If you find one at a good price and are happy its authentic, the crystal is scratch free (if Sapphire...acrylic will polish out) if it has drilled lugholes check as best you can that the springbars fit well in the holes and the holes are not enlarged or even slightly oval shaped, if it has solid endlinks make sure they are not "gappy", check the bezel Pearl is not cracked (there is a sapphire glass cap over the lume) and that the bezel is in reasonable shape the One thing to really watch out for on used Subs is the chamfer on the lug horns.....this is what seperates a good Sub from a Great one.

I was doing alittle research and came across a guy from Kildare selling one of these for €3200. He withdrew his auction as he was only getting bids of €2500. Seems like it should be possible to get one of these alright. Patience will be the key.

I've been watching these on US eBay lately too, a few in the last few weeks have gone for just a shade over $3k, like $3200, $3250, $3300 -- nothing under $3000 though and most are $4500, so 2500 - in Euro would be a very good deal considering almost all mainstream watches seem to be much cheaper in the states.
