Minister Deenihan described the discovery as 'a major find of significance not only to Ireland but also to the international archaeological, historical and maritime communities'.
He added: 'It could provide huge insight into life on board and the reality of the military and naval resources available to the Armada campaign.'

Was the minister exaggerating snow? I'd say it could provide huge insight into life on board if they find a letter from a sailor saying 'I really hate this job, my we've run out of Rice Krispies, the captain isnt even Spanish, he's from the Congo.....' . I'm not being negative about the find, its very interesting, its the nonsense of the politician who craves the column inches.

i'd far prefer the guy to be excited about the dig to the point he went a little overboard (excuse the pun) on levels of info that can be derived as opposed to him being completely disinterested and unwilling to fund it.

    Well put dr gonzo.

jmse i think its fair enough to get excited, its a previously unknown spanish armada wreck, in shallow water, being dug before any curious robbers can get their paws on it, so i'd have high hopes.

As for the 'daily life' bit we have to use all the clues available to build up that picture on sites - even on prehistoric sites where there aren't any letters...if ya get my drift.

There were loads of different sizes of ships in the armada and as well as carrying ammunition the main ones had gold etc as seen in the museum in derry. Then the day to day stuff like plates and knives, cups, sailors personal items..any of these can help with the big picture. Some historical age artefacts can often be linked to contemporary records etc.

    Should be one to watch
