Travel Insurance

Going on family holiday next week - 2 adults, 4 children. We have VHI and the Euro Health Insurance Card. We will be hiring a car and obviously having to take out whatever insurance required there so I'm wondering why we would need travel insurance or what more it would cover.

A decent policy would cover stuff like, having to cancel your holiday due to an emergency, flight delays, missed flights, lost or stolen passports, lost baggage, an air ambulance home if required (god forbid), significant medical cover, having to cut your holiday short etc etc

We also have vhi but would also take out a decent travel insurance policy, they are not that expensive considering you are probably paying a chunk of money for your holiday, annual multi-trip insurance can also be good value

Have never had to claim but know people who have and they were thankful they were covered

I just use an annual policy. Costs around €90 for the family. Used it twice over the years for claims for flight cancellations and delays.

I also have VHI and EHIC, but choose to have travel insurance also, mainly for the sort of risk that naughtysmurf describes. It suits me to have an annual policy: it costs little more than a single-trip policy, and I travel more than once a year.

It's worth checking what VHI offers. You can get a good deal because travel cover is basically a top-up to the health cover you have already purchased.

Thank you for replies. I have checked it out and its so reasonable that I might as well invest for the peace of mind.
