I think these are a great idea, keep you very aware of your speed particularly in urban areas.

Two - digit display, would only attract boy racer cyclists :D

    FYP:D

Seriously though, I think those displays are a bit of a gimmick and the money could be better spent.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Is it coincidence that the speed shown on that sign, coincides with the Meaning of Life..........hint: Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy..........

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I've seen this before when they we were resurfacing the road from Cork to Midleton mainly because they brought in a temporary 60K limit which nobody sticks to so this was another way I guess of slowing traffic down.

Do you know those big portable orange signs with solar panels that display info for road works etc or events? There was one of those and it read "your speed is" ** km/h. I remember it was spot on and changed to the car behind just as I passed. I'm pretty sure it was for real.

There's one of those signs on the N17 by Knock airport and it's never within 20kmh of my own speedo
I also passed one yesterday on my pushbike and I was pedalling at 43kmh, I hope this one was more accurate than the one at Knock :)

They can go up to 199 ;)

I was told that if I ever get to 88 mph..something terrible would happen...:)

I find them very effective for reminding me of my speed and slowing me down, though I can see the point about the boy racers.

I can also feel irrationally smug when I am within the speed limit!

I seen a great one up north,( can't remember the town) If you were over the limit you got a red frown, under the limit a big green smiley face. My kids loved it, and clamoured for me to slow down when approaching one to make sure we we under so they could see the big smiley.

Ye, they also have them on a few of the M50 interchanges with the very low speed limits.

I thought it was somewhat cool because it was the first time I'd seen something like that here !

I passed one the other day on the Red Cow interchange, it stated that my speed was 72 km/h while my speedometer said 45-50 km/h ......

I passed one the other day and it said my speed was 74 but my speedometer read 88.

There used to be one of those at the end of the M7 in Kildare back the days before it ran all the way to Limerick. I was driving down from Dublin one morning at at the end these 2 skanger civics shot by me before the dual carriageway ended and activated the sign at 92 mph in a 50 mph zone of course. There happened to be an unmarked Garda car sitting on the hard shoulder just before the sign and they were collared on the way into Kildare town. Oh how I laughed at them when I passed them. Happy days! :D

Met a variation of this in the Spanish Pyrennes. They are at the entrances to villages going downhill where, because of the descent cars tend to pick up a lot more speed. Speed limit in villages there is 50km/h.

There is a flashing orange light, if you stay below 50 it stays flashing. If you are above 50 it starts to flash a lot faster, then if you fail to slow to below 50 it goes red, so you are forced to stop and wait for 15 seconds at a red light.

Never seen them anywhere else, great idea.

There is one on Newtownpark avenue,Dublin and everyone always slows down for it. Its a real psychological thing. I think they are very effective without being money making.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,593 ✭✭✭tossy

If you need an expensive flashing sign at the side of the road to remind you of your speed then you shouldn't be driving.

Even though these are used internationally it reeks of an Irish solution to an Irish problem.

From what I've seen they slow people down. What more are you looking for from them?

They dont slow anyone down, two I know of actually three of that I know of, dont seem to have any affect. One on the way to Malahide, one in Kinsealy and one in Limerick

If you look at the sign there's a small 1 beside the two other digits :p

(And 100km/h isn't an impossible speed either to be able to see the 1 illuminated)

Chuck a speed van, speed camera and Garda Traffic core speed point beside em and I'm sure they would do a useful job.

OK. Thanks for digging up a 4 year old topic.
