He got stale as a character.

    The end.

He was in the shape of his life back in those days

What came after might be not the greatest but I thought the actual demasking moment was done really well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,218 ✭✭✭✭Rjd2

    Ruin him?

For a guy who in his near 15 year career who only ever clicked with Rey in the ring and was never at the level of the top guys like Austin, Rock, Hunter, I think he has done really well. He is one of their top earners, well protected in his booking and is always on a PPV card.

He's happy with his current card position and probably has a job for life with the E, Not shabby at all really. :o

I was a HUGE Kane fan like a lot of you

    Why did they de-mask him?

character was well stale long before he lost his mask, remember masked kane tagging with heat magnet x-pac.....
Dont get it? Best gimmick ever , SO cool

are you serious, the kane gimmick wouldn't even be close to top 10 never mind best ever

    Yeah, where's Kane-n-nite? lol.

Well 97-98 kane is probably my favourite gimmick of all time. it's so awesome. Completely hokey storyline but i thought he looked awesome, and booked awesome.

But Kane has been pushed and de-pushed so many times, it happens ever 2-3 years where it looks like he's getting some big, then they pull the plug. Like a much more successful version of Test.

I never forgave HHH for not only putting himself in the armageddon 2003 match (Kane vs Goldberg) but then winning the damn match. Kane just got a new push with losing his mask :mad: That said, 2004+ he's been so lazy and stale, maybe he gave up. WWE don't care, he doesn't care, just get rid of him....

Kane really needs to re-mask. Masks are awesome.

Booking monsters is really tough in the modern post territory era.

    Kane ruined Kane.

When he was demasked and seen his face for the first time in years, he realised he was not disfigured and in essence, lost the reason to be the monster he was.

He then developed morals and feelings, thus, completely destroying any part of the destructive soul he had.
He became, in a way, human.

Its a simple character story arc.
Why do people not get this?

Dave Meltzer wrote this in 1999ish and it is a rather funny piece making fun of how many times BY THAT POINT writers broke continuity:
Kane is really Glen. I think he was once the Unahomber. As a child, he
was in a fire that killed both his parents. Except his real father was
Paul Bearer, who raised him from the age of nine. Mark was also raised
by Paul Bearer after his parents died in the fire. However, even
though they lived in the same house as children, Mark thought Glen had
died for 20 years until he showed up in St. Louis the day after Brian
died. Brian really died. Mark's parents really didn't. Nor did Glen,
nor did Mark really think Glen died. He knew that was just a clever
wrestling storyline. Nor did they live in the same house. Anyway, Glen
told Paul that Mark set the fire that never took place. Mark wanted to
kill Paul for sayng he murdered his parents because Glen used to fool
around with fires and was the one who set the fire. Paul was having an
affair with Mark's mom and was actually Glen's father. Mark wanted to
kill Paul for that one. Glen and Paul set Mark on fire and choke
slammed him into his mother's bones after they exhumed the grave.
Eventually Mark got so mad that they fought each other. But that was
really a promotional stunt by Vince to draw a buy rate for
Wrestlemania so Mark hated Vince. So because he hated him so much, he
and Glen got together to be his bodyguards. But they got yelled at
because Vince was an ungrateful asshole so they destroyed Vince's
ankle. Actually that was because why? The same reason Paul Wight,
Vince's top enforcer, turned face to get away from Vince being such an
asshole and because Rock was such an asshole and was back with him two
weeks later, in the role of Vince's top enforcer and running in to
help Rock. Anyway, as it turned out, after spending a year fighting
Glen because he'd killed his parents, Mark admitted he was the one who
killed his parents and burned his brother. And the police show up to
arrest wrestlers every Monday but nobody ever questions him. And Paul
loved those parents and Glen, his son. So now, Paul and Mark are back
together. And [Raw scripters] Vince Russo and Ed Ferrara's attention
to the minutest detail make them the greatest script writers on
    television.

    Awesome

I'm just thinking of Kane during the Undertaker's entrance at WM14. Him standing in the ring motionless as the Undertaker came up the aisle. Looked so cool with the close ups of his masked face being momentarily lit up by the canned lightning flashes going off overhead.

They knew how to do it back in them days......

There was a brief period in 2003, when Kane unmasked, where he was actually the most exciting thing in wrestling. Tombstoning Linda, walking to the ring with armed guards etc. It was great for a few weeks until it fizzled out.

I think the problem with the Kane character is that it wasn't reinvented after that, whereas Taker has reinvented himself several times over. While Taker's character is pretty stale in its current format, he works a schedule that is quite relaxed and he generally delivers in the ring. Kane can't go in the ring as well these days and his character is over-exposed.

I'd like to see them do a storyline where he gets burned and has to wear the mask but they would probably feel that's too close to Cody Rhodes's gimmick right now. I get the feeling Kane will wind down and retire in the next 2 years and that he's just working now to build up the funds for his eventual retirement.

I remember that he set JR on Fire too.

With such a destructive monster like Kane, I think his character really suffered from the babyface runs where they completely humanized him. He lost his credibility as a serious monster when he was the nice happy babyface playing to the crowd, dancing with Santino, etc.

Kane with the mask on but no hair would just look weird.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,013 ✭✭✭✭jaykhunter

Agreed Dr.Evil; gone are the days where Kane'd be the "gatekeeper to the main event" - i.e. you gotta get thru him to be considered for a run. I remember Rock beating him in 98 and it was massive, despite needing help from Foley. Fast forward to 2003 where La Resistance do the business in a few minutes.

Don't forget that idiotic benny hill crap he had when Edge 'stole' Paul Bearer, chasing him around the arena. That and his compassion when Big Show's leg was run over. Hilarious; in the awful sense.

    Nothing that a re-masking and push wouldn't fix :)

I thought that Katie Vick vignette was hilarious! It wasn't until years later where i got to see the whole thing (on youtube). Also; isn't HHH AWESOME in a mask? :pac:

I'm sure they could fashion him a suitable wig from his "brother"'s shorn locks. :D

Hang on though to be fair if that can throw a stupid mask on Cody Rodes then they should have no problem re-masking Kane..
like OK Inferno match to get him burnt then he brings back the mask. He won't wear the 1999 mask again so I heard because he had trouble breathing but still to bring the other mask would be great! that Storyline they had a couple of years ago when he carried a bag to the ring what looked like a mask.. what was it Rey's mask in the end ? .. False hopes WWE :(

Sure new push, new mask, new look. mask + bald will do fine! the mask just has to kick ass.

Definitely another burning angle would be awesome. i love the hokey storylines :) Have someone go to his house or a funeral parlour etc and lock kane in it and set it on fire. :D:D

He needs to be the monster heel on SD

Kane as a face dont work

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,013 ✭✭✭✭jaykhunter

A bump in the road of monster heel is that he's been in WWE so long that he's a respected veteran and he'll always been cheered by a sizeable section of the audience. Like Ric Flair trying to turn heel; won't ever fully work :p

Never going to happen in the PG WWE era.

To answer the question: the real life Kane - Glen Jacobs - seems to be a quiet, professional sort who does not ask for much, and is never badmouthed in shoot interviews.

The guy just wants to entertain and help newer guys, and does not seem too worried about title reigns or main events. A rare breed.
