Braking without that "jolt"

    Hey

I'm finding it slightly difficult to brake and stop my dad's car to a complete stop without making the car jolt.... It just feels like I slammed my foot on the brake rather than slowing down really smoothly...

I can get it sometimes but other times it's rough when I stop... I'm not fully sure how I brake basically... I think I brake brake brake and just before stopping press the clutch to the floor.... something like that anyways...

As I said it works sometimes and I get a perfectly smooth stop but other times the car just jolts that wee bit... I'm not stalling the car or anything in that line but I just can't figure out exactly how to stop the car smoothly...

any tips on what I'm doing wrong :)

and my second question - when I've stopped do I "HAVE" to pull the handbrake before putting the car into neutral... or is putting the car into neutral while holding the footbrake and then pulling the handbrake acceptable...

    Cheers :)

Slow down gradually, by getting down to second gear, reduce speed, start braking gently, bare tip of the brake don't press down too hard unless its an emergency brake. Braking braking braking, clutch in just before you stop (keep feet on clutch pressed in and bare tip of brake pressed in at same time) but brake again once you have clutch in (clutch and brake together). You will come to a smooth stop. Before you lift off both feet off clutch and brake make sure you pull up handbrake, get into neutral, turn off key and put car in gear into 1st gear.

Practise doing it outside the house on your own with engine off to get the feel of it, practise changing down gear and using pedals as mentioned above. Once you feel confident then do so when you turn on car, to get the motion of it and manoeuvres right. It takes time, practise and patience. Practise, practise practise! Good luck OP.

Brake gently and clutch down when required.
Just as you feel that the car is coming to a stop gently feather your foot off the brake. Doing this will give you a smooth stop.

The jolt is caused because you are continuing to apply pressure to the brake pedal until the car has actually stopped.

    Give this a try
