Latest government motoring SCAM! NCT/DOE for a Carvan...

Well, have just bought a 2001 Peugeot 206 1.9 Diesel carvan. It was registered privately, it is being used privately, it is insured privately. On the Vehicle Registration Form, it says beside category of registration: PRIVATE.

I knew this vehicle needed an NCT but was happy to attend to that. Tried to book it in for an NCT today, get told that with effect from last August, the NCT do not test any carvan type vehicles, all these vehicles MUST now be brought to a DOE centre.

So 1 test every 3 years costing under 50 Euro has now become a test every year costing 85 Euro.

I have been onto the Dept. of Transport and their attitude is that they can make up the rules as they want and there is no basis in law required for any of their diktats.

So there you have it, more scamming, thieving and masterstroking from the public sector IDIOTS in the Dept. of Transport who make up more petty rules to ride the Irish motorist.

Just to point out, the NCT is every 2 years, is it different for that type of vehicle?
And as your vehicle is probably over 10 years old now, it would in fact be an annual NCT. So all you're out is €35 a year.

You should have done your homework before buying it, there's no point in huffing & puffing now.

< edit - i see you know the NCT test is now yearly for 10 year old vehicles >

OP: Plenty of posts on this topic done before. Yes you need a DOE for carvans no matter how you tax them. Government can & will always do as they want. It's the system whether we like it or not.

I'm not annoyed over where it gets tested, I previously had the exact same type of car and it was an NCT job. I just hate the endless makey uppy rules and the endless beaurocracy. Everything in this country is overly complicated and illogical. It's endless beaurocracy and "for the file" with absolutely everything, and we wonder why we have no jobs with this kind of endless bullsh*t going on all the time, stupid petty rules being made up to keep overpaid p*ss takers in their handy little PS ivory towers, making up little rules for their precious little files and wrecking everyones head in the process.

This car is registered as a private vehicle, why on earth cannot it not be NCT'd?

Because it is, physically, a van. Testing is conducted on the vehicle type, not it's taxation class.

Its still a van. Would you expect them to NCT a high roof LWB transit for you if it was privatly taxed?

If it's a van why was it not registered as a commericial vehicle then?

Because it is not being used for commercial purposes.

I doe'd my Astra van 2 weeks ago its taxed privately and is classed as private on the log book I got it doe'd in Kilkenny no hassle at all they spent 15 minutes testing it handed me the usual cert and said it was perfect. They can't refuse you a doe as you can't Nct it so it has to be doe'd.

No idea what you're whinging about OP, I'd rather DOE my cars any day than NCT them. The DOE I understand, it's straight forward, the NCT is a feckin variable feast. A neighbour brought her car for a NCT, it failed on a small hole in the exhaust, only. She missed the re-test date and had to book a new test, 23 days later - did so and failed on a list as long as her arm. Car now scrapped.. Give me a DOE any day. It's a van anyway, so what's the issue?? You DOE vans...

    ...hey, its a start.... :)

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I completely agree with you there it is not as strict they just check all the basics in the doe. We have doe'd some amount of vehicles over the year most were in good condition however the odd one my dad often said he would expect it to fail the doe and none of them ever did. The Nct is more strict. I don't really mind doeing my van as at the end of the day it is a legal requirement. And at least you know when you doe something that you are not going to have a long list of fail items on it.

Many years ago I had a Toyota Lite Ace as an odd job runaround. The NCT people wouldn't test it os it was a van, although it was taxed/registered privately. It was like this when I bought it. By the same token the DOE people wouldn't test it cos it was registered as a privat vehicle and not commercial. So, for a number of years I drove it this way, taxed and insured, with full disclosure to the insurance company, who didn't care a bit!

Maybe things have changed since then?

Surly that would make it more easy to doe. As I said mine was taxed privately and they did doe no hassle as I initially thought I would have the same problem as you. I don't see how Kilkenny doe centre would have different rules to any other doe centre.

*Yawns... Another Government bashing thread, haven't we seen enough of these on here?

OP, you're driving a Van, so quit blaming everything on the Government and the ''Bureaucracy'' and just DOE your van. Simples

How easy the test is also depends on the tester. I had our 206 fail the doe Friday on two perfect front disks that were apparently excessively worn

    Just don't DOE it.

There is no DOE disk to display, just a cert you keep in an envelope in the van.

Cops never ask for a DOE.
