Are you more likely to survive a light airplane crash or a commercial jet liner crash?

Settle a bet between me and my girlfriend.

I think you would be more likely to survive a light airplane crash but I have no experience in the subject!

It'll depend on the specifics of the crash.

It usually depends as the above poster said. But I'm gonna go for commercial aircraft. You do hear stories of more people dying in light air crashes than commercial ones.

Of course, but i'll put it this way: if you were going to be in an aircrash which planewould you prefer to be in?

Personally i would choose the light aircraft. I just don't like the thought of not knowing what is going on in the cockpit, the huge amount of fuel on board, a couple of hundred screaming people etc.

If you were to have total engine failure, I'd prefer to be in a small aircraft. I'd say that you'd have a better chance of making a safe landing in a small aircraft which would be travelling at a much slower speed compared to a large aircraft. The chances of breaking up during a forced landing in a large aircraft would be much higher as a result, decreasing your chances of surviving.

You and your "girlfriend" really need to find better things to do with your time!

    .

As said before, it all depends on the specifics of the crash. Assuming you mean its going to hit the ground or water while the pilots have it under control then I would imagine its much safer to be in a light aircraft as it is much slower etc as mentioned above.

There is just far too many different ways a plane can actually crash to say fully. If its going to break up in midair and spiral nose first into the ground well then it doesn't matter at all, you're probably going to die either way.

    Troll much ?

Me personally, a light aircraft, better chances of finding somewhere to land compared to the likes of a 737 and bigger. Again it depends on the circumstances though.

    Light craft crash.

High speed nose first impact with the ground, it would make no difference as already mentioned!

Assuming you mean an engine failure, fuel starvation or similar where some manner of control remains then i would absolutely rather be in a light SE aircraft! In general they are easier to glide, can land in a much smaller space that a commercial aircraft and would also be easier to ditch on water if necessary

It really depends on whats in the light aircraft. If it has a parachute (lol) in it then i would say that it would probably be safer in the light aircraft but if not then of course the large aircraft personally i think the 777 with its flexibility is the best aircraft to be in a crash.

A light "aircraft" could be a heli, and can be put in a reasonable size garden.. with some practice.

Note to self... Check Opening Post from now on...
