I'm not too familiar with Yaris's but that seems like a lot of money for a 12 year old car. Putting that aside however, it would be best have a mechanic or someone who knows the ins and outs of cars come along with you.

Crazy money for those 12 year old Japanese versions of the Yaris. OP what reason do you want a Vitz over a Yaris considering the premium being asked by sellers?

Another €1k and you can have a 03 Yaris like this:

Bananas money. If the seller is as crazy as I think he/she is, the car will have been through the mill also.

Yarii seem to fetch good prices, no matter how old they are. I'm debating whether to sell mine now while they're worth so much.

edit: i thought it was way overpriced, it turns out its not really!!

would there be much of a difference in insurance prices between a yaris and a vitz??, it being a jap import from 99 i assume its trouble with insurance companies?

I think most Vitz are 1.3 litre and probably don't have a factory fitted immobilizer as car theft would not have been as common in Japan back then. Being able to start/steal a car without needing the key doesn't wear well with insurance companies.

I would have said that the OP's Yaris was a great little buy.

If I was going to get a Yaris (which will never happen) I don't see much wrong with it, or the price!

to be fair, the vitz might look a bit more shonky on the outside than the yaris but they offer a far better spec, 4 power windows, air con, power mirrors, cd player as standard, lots of bits a 99 yaris wouldn't offer for similar money. though you are right that you could buy a much newer reg for your money in some respects it wouldn't be half the car.

yaris seem to hold their money very well though for some reason, i sold my 2001 1.5 t-sport last month for 3500 :P

as regards things to look out for in the mk1 yaris

front suspension drop links are a weak point, listen out for noisy water pumps too although both of these are relatively cheap and simple repairs to carry out. other than that you are really just checking for the usual wear and tear items.

check your insurance if you have already a policy. rsa refused to insure vitz when I tried to transfer my insurance. I had to cancel it and cancelling policy is hassle.

car wise vitz have much better spec and made in japan but missing immobilizer.

I paid 2150 for 99 auto with 50k miles and 2 year nct a month ago. so price seems normal.

no done a bit of research on the vitz and 90% are under 1 litre there are 1.3 R sports models though.

thanks for the info will get mechanic to check these out.And I think its a great buy too:D I went for a Vitz because of the high spec.Sold a Yaris 2001 for €4000 not so long ago and bought a heap off junk I want to get rid off, dont do a lot of long distance driving so it would be perfect for me:)
