Setting up my desktop as a work computer. I like the idea of Open Office and have used it a little and am happy with it.

I'd be doing a lot of mail merge type appliations.

Is it worth giving it a shot or should I stay with MS Office?

It's worth a shot. See how you get on with it. I like it but personally I prefer libre office:

    Similarly free:

Have a read of this, if it can do everything you want then I'd say go for it.

I'd say go for LibreOffice. Oracle are supporting this now instead of Open which has been left to the community to maintain. It's a strong community but I see LibreOffice being the better long-term option.
