    hello everybody,
    i am currently driving a 97polo 1.4 with 101k miles
i would like to change my car for something newer.
    my requirements are:
    1. the car should be 2007 or later
    2. between 1.4 to 2L engine.
    3. bit spacious - so a large car or family car
    4. my mileage for the last 4years is 7kmiles per year. my commute to work is 2kms each way. i don't think a diesel makes sense for my commute.
    but things can change.
    5. a big fan of passat and mondeo(lately). but i dont mind skoda, toyota or honda too.
    6. important thing - budget is 7k including my car for exchange (if its a garage)

any suggestions which would suit my budget and requirements?
i did a bit of homework and in petrol i found below cars
    1.4 TSI passat
1.6 corolla/avensis(not sure about tax yet)

there are more availability in diesel
    1.9TDI passat or octavia
    1.9TDI mondeo
hondas are found to be bit expensive or high mileage

TBH, it doesn't make sense to use any car for such a short run. The car will never warm up, and condensation will accumulate both in the engine and in the exhaust.

    thanks Anan1 for the feedback.
unfortunately all my weekday trips are short - trip to train station, tesco, GAA club, work. my weekend trips are usually long.

Don't even bother trying to trade the 97 Polo in if buying from a dealer/garage. A 14 year old car is worth feck all to a garage and most will make out they are doing you a favour. Instead sell it privately and then buy the new car with straight cash (no trade in). You will get a bigger discount off the new car by not having the burden of a trade-in especially a 14 year old car.

Regarding new cars, on a budget of €7k I'd doubt you will find a decent Passat 1.4 TSi for that sort of money, they only came out towards the begining of 2008. I'd recommend something like the Mazda 6 petrol, very reliable, within budget and roomy:
