    Hi folks,

New build is starting to take shape but inside window frames have gotten very dusty and have small bits of mortar on them from plastering (the bulk of which I've taken off). I'm going to go and clean them tomorrow before the window boards go on but wondered if anyone had any advice as to what cleaning product I could use or what would be good to get the dust and marks off them?

It's the frames I'm going to concentrate on and they are black woodgrain PVC.

I'd also be interested in hearing any solutions as I need to remove plaster from pvc frames downstairs and wooden velux frames upstairs.

Hi lads, just done that job. Hot soapy water and plenty and plenty of elbow grease.

Baby wipes. BTW, I'm not joking - they really work well!

What's the best way to remove smallish lumps of plaster from velux window frames? I don't really want to take a scraper to my new windows...

The BEST thing to take plaster of windows is the Plasterer that put it on there in the first place !

    but failing that .....

Warm water and a soft cloth is best.

If the plaster is hard and dried, then put the water on and let it soften the plaster first. This should mean less elbow grease and less abrasion on the frame surface.

It is better not to use any cleaning product that has any sort of chemicals in them.

Baby wipes are usually PH neutral so unlikely to cause any damage, but you had better read the label first.

Avoid using scrapers, chemical cleaners, scouring pads, etc.

Be very careful NOT to use the same cloth that has cleaned the plaster from the frames to clean the glass. Small particles of plaster can cause scratches on the Low-E soft coating applied to double and triple glazed packages.

Finally ... make sure that you have removed any plaster that is caught between the frames and sashes as it can damage the window mechanisms, window seals, etc.

You'd swear I worked for Johnson & Johnson!

Another good use for baby wipes is removing cement/render splashes from windows and windoe frames and from PVC fascias and soffits.

I found a mix of vinegar and warm water in a small hand sprayer very good for the frames. Mix the sprayer about 1/4 vinegar and 3/4s warm water. Spray the mix onto the window frame and leave for 30 seconds to a minute to soak in. Then start wiping with a damp cloth. It worked very well for mine.

Picked it up off an e-how website on the net. The only problem was the stink of vinegar in the house for the rest of the day!

Hey, the fast approach to this problem is called Limesol, its a hydrocloric acid based product and i know poeple here are gonna say its dangerous but its not! weve put it on timber windows, pvc windows and aluminium windows of all shapes colours and makes it doesnt burn or effect the colour. you mix it 3 to 1 with water and apply with a paint brush leave it for 5 mins and wash off.
