    I'm not 100% on this, but i think its where you break or change the structural loading to accommodate whatever layout issue you have. for instance half way down a building to suit a change in use or span. I believe there's one in the gate cinema in Cork between the cinemas and the apartments above.

    I think the simplest way to think of it is like a table - you build your ground floor column layout with (usually) a concrete slab first floor (could be a higher floor I suppose), this then allows you the flexibility to build a different layout on top of the 'table'.
