(no, it's not a spam thread).

you want to raise a few bob, so you decide to start a religion. what would you choose as the basis for the religion, and what tenets would underpin the teachings?

you can choose one of several goals: a) maximum profits. b) maximum kudos. c) maximum contact with the opposite sex.

A & C have instant appeal ... tough choice that .. I suppose I'll take whichever comes first and then try for a follow up!

They tried for option C during the 60's and it died out fairly quickly...so it's not really a viable option.

Though i reckon choosing Bob Dylan as their messiah was a poor move.

Matt Dillahunty of the Atheist Experience oftens mentions when challenged with a question on morality that he is a testament to the existence of it outside of religion as if someone who's a known atheist like him (or to a smaller degree, everyone on this forum :D ) "turned" Christian and published a book whether they believe it or not it would sell buckets in America.

That's only the start though. Imagine all the stuff you could make up! Your tormented history of debauchery before finding salvation! The beautiful moment when you were saved!

Alot of people spend all day here dissecting the bible and debunking stuff. Imagine if you twisted that ability the other way around. If the people who stand up and say no when they see cold cruel manipulation of believers became the ones who manipulate, I think they'd be awesome at it.

This all of course assumes you have no compunction about being a truly horrible human being.

    As authors.

The "X is a religion in itself" is the laziest argument since "Well how do you know that? They used to thing the earth was flat"

Yes, it's lucky they started publishing books on atheism - they had no career at all before that.

You need to go for the perfect storm:

1 - Make people feel worthless.
2 - Promise them love despite their worthlessness.
3 - Constantly talk about love.
4 - Constantly act in hate.
5 - Make them feel vulnerable and mortal.
6 - Promise them safety and immortality.
    7 - Preach being humble.
    8 - Behave with arrogance.
9 - Do and say anything to save face.
    10 - Never, ever admit you're wrong.

Now you can have anything. Wealth beyond measure? Sure, have a golden palace! Dictate national policy? No problem, just spread the faith to the poor and desperate. Sex with children? Grand, just keep moving them around so no one notices. A secret family in California? Super, just don't shoot any home movies.

First and foremost you need good costumes. I as pope or 'árd awesome' will dress something like this

    as for tenets? um

    free pizza
    reincarnation, with pizza
    pineapple on pizza is forbidden.
keep ye holy the sabbath for watching horror movies with beer and pizza
    seats are for feet.
