I see a lot of people talking about criminal past while also talkin about gettin a visa. Do immigration authorities check out these boards and are they able to get someones e-mail and i.p address?

Doesn't matter, I could say I'm just home from a quick killing spree, but that doesn't mean I actually murdered anyone.

A lot of people say stuff online that may not be true, so you'd not only have the issue of matching a person's real life identity to their username (what if they have more than one account?), you also have to figure out if they were telling the truth or not.

The US authorities scan newspapers and enter the details of criminals in various databases.

    Entirely possible.

What about anonymous posters? Could they trace them?

Not without a court order. Some people are stupid enough to post enough info to be identified.

I was looking at the british expats website and there were lots of people posting incriminating messages about themselves. maybe its just too much hassle to get a court order for each one

i watched a documentary once about white supremacist groups in the uk and usa. the internet forums the supremacists gathered on were heavely monitored by law enforcement agencies such as the fbi. i'd imagine this is the case with some members on boards who have over 1000 posts defending the ira. im sure the intelligence services would be curious to know who these people are

Judging by other threads, the Gardaí are well aware of who these people are.

I was just wondering about british people who blatantly post up that they have convictions and are goin entering under the vwp. Obviously they dont post under their real name. I was just wondering how easily these people are uncovered?

somehow i doubht they would have the resources to monitor websites. im sure they assume the applicant is telling the truth. if nothing shows up on a background check it would be of no concern to them. but if the applicant is witholding information he/she must be aware of the repercussions

I can't remember the conditions when I joined boards. Was there any sort of commitment to tell the truth? (Just to clarify I do) ;)Obviously trolling is out, but is a person allowed to have a sort of online persona or create a character?

What I'm getting at, would the relevant authorities have reasonable grounds to take any story posted here as fact? Of course, even if they couldn't use it as an admission, it might give them a clue as to where to start looking for further information.
