I NEED, a laptop-laptop, a laptop that's what I need...

Excuse that but the songs in my head all day.

Basically, looking for a new laptop for college this Autumn.

Processors? Resolutions? Etc? The numbers and letters after these terms mean very little to me. That's why I decided to come here, to implore y'all for your expertise. :)

I want a laptop that looks really cool. Sleek. Stylish. But is also sound&stable, reasonably high-performing and has no loose screws on the inside. :)

upper limit about 800euro. I would splurge for a MacAir, but, no dvd drive, one USB port..... I just find it a little devoid of the basics is all.

In anycase: if y'all could recommend something, that'd be great. Will not be used for super graphic orientated gaming, or running very demanding software. (Hoping to start into law)

Alternatively I can pop into Harvey Norman, and buy whatever the nice man there recommends.

    Thank you thank you. :)

pre-owed mac book pro,889 euro, very nice looking, powerful and has a disk drive, refurbished macbook pro have the same warranty as a new one,and sometimes you would not know it is refurbished.

This probably isn't what you wanna hear, but if you're mac way inclined, I'd personally save an extra money or two and go for the cheapest Macbook Pro. Just planting a thought there. A though that you have probably thought about already and subsequently dismissed for reasons unbeknownst to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 244 ✭✭leavingcert.

Well the price of the original macbook starts at only 20 euro more than the macbook air, it looks great and is a good machine, too. However, for less money you can get a much better laptop, such as a sony vaio with 500GB memory and 4GB RAM, for only 649 euro in currys. I got a MacBook Pro a few months ago, and already the charger is faulty, and sometimes everything just shuts down, however overally, I've been really happy with it.

Id get the macbook pro istead of a vaio, the extra cost is worth it because everything works much better and its much better quality than cheap plastic in the vaio

Got any English mates OP? If so you could get this:

    http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/HP_ProBook_4320s_1066236.html

If the order is invoiced to a UK address you are entitled to £100 cashback off HP. Means that the price including delivery to Ireland is £310 (€357).

Just got one and I'm delighted with it. Small, fast, quiet and looks good.

    Mega thread here:

I have indeed looked into the MacBookPro.

It all seems lovely; and I probably would if it were 400euro cheaper. I've read some pretty negative reviews of the newest line of MacBookPros. They all seem to be recommended & worthwhile primarily only for video editors, softwaredesigners, etc etc...

Veering away from Apple Products... Where do I stand? :)

    Acer, 8GBs RAM, USB3

I see where you're coming from:

    Appreciate the suggestions;

have been researching: I like this; fairly similarly priced to your most basic suggestions, seems to be of an enviable spec?

    100euro dearer at Currys.... & incredibly good-looking. :)

17inch screen however, pro / con? :/ heavier obviously.

& also; since we've gone the musical route: I can't embed & shall stop here.

Aside from the portability, battery life tends to be shorter with a larger screen.

If you are going 17" however this is pretty nice bit of kit to consider.

Which is what something like 250 extra?

And since the OP doesn't have the budget for a new mac, let alone shelling out another 1/5 of the price on top of that for extended warranty, is hardly relevant to the thread.

    Which is how much again?

Its still worth it though. My brother spilt beer on his macbook 3 years ago and got it completely replaced under applecare.

They basically gave him another 999 euro.

Thats how much of value it is.

    So its worth it.

    Hmmm

As for the slim unibody design, a mate of mine's macbook pro kept getting bits chipped off the edges around the keyboard cos Apple couldn't bear to put two little bumps on the lower half. Plus the HD died (which of course happens in all machines PC or MAC)

How old is that video? thats properly the one of very few people who experienced their mac crash. He more likely tried to install windows on it and wrecked it. Most of the interfaces are in BIOS and not in OSX. ie. they tried to alter their OS. It could hardly be from normal usage. Just look at the last part of the video. From 5:15 . Is that how a normal user would treat their mac?

Thats waffle stating viruses will grow on mac. Macs have been on this planet for over 30 years yet still no viruses... What makes you think they will get them in the short term future?

Because there was also a budget in the OP, really you are after dragging this thread miles off topic already. If you have a link to a Mac book air with 3 year care protection for 800 then by all means share it, otherwise none of the last page is of no relevance to the OP.

    The internet begs to differ

Apple allows it without voiding the warranty, most Microsoft products you open voids the warranty
Nope considering microsoft dont make laptops. most if not all laptop manufactures allow harddrives, ram and wireless cards.

What?, they do... I press off... Mac turns off within 3 seconds, I press shutdown on windows and I'm waiting over a few minutes after waiting on programs to end.
They dont power off fully they use a very clever Deep Sleep mode system it allows for the os to load a lot quicker all apple products use this in some form or another

Anyway back on topic heres a laptop that has similar specs to a mac for €460 with 3 year protection for another €60 which about €600-€700 less than a comparable mac link

I have nothing against Macs at all, I am not for one moment disputing the quailty of the finished product. I simply try to reccomend whatever is most suitable for someones needs.

And when you can get an Asus 17" laptop with a Full HD LED display, Bluray etc for £650, where ultraportability is not a major requirement, and most of the bundled apple multimedia software is likely not to be of much use to the OP who is doing a Law degree, it would be crazy to spend the same if not money on a 11.6" Macbook Air IMO.

And if the OP wants to spend less than her full budget, there are plenty of suitable quality options available for much less than either of the above.

The hardware starts to work harder when you need it, unlike windows wasting unnecessary power
Windows laptops only use what they need and you get much better hardware for your money
Yeah and somehow, mac uses less power on the same specs. You can install your own hardware on a mac even though you don't need to.

I said file not software, besides you can install windows and run it at the same time in parallels
So essentially spend a fortune on a mac and use windows
You obviously don't know the purpose of it. Its for people who actually want to use a mac, then if they essentially need to use a certain program that requires windows they can.

False they do last longer ill prove it to you if you want.
    Go on
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/

Wrong who wants a stupid fad beats logo on the front of their laptop forever, the envy is the ugliest laptop on the market.
The beats logo is only on a special edition and anyway the same can be said about macs
Your so mis-informed how is an apple logo a rare addition? its a trademark its on all of their products if you haven't noticed.

You must be having a laugh, since when is microsoft more innovative?
You might want to look over the last 20 years of OS's they've led the way and still do
Apples business culture evolves around innovation and the evidence lies within their products. Look back a few years who invented the iPod, iTouch, iPhone, iPad, the worlds smallest desktop, the worlds thinnest laptop. How are microsoft more innovative name products they invented that apple haven't, not ones they copied from apple.

No they don't, look at all of the new gestures on OS Lion atm, on widows you can scroll up and down... how is this on par with mac gestures? you have obviously never used a recent trackpad on a mac
Having owned multiple laptops i beg to differ
I guarantee you, they don't have the gesture features apple have running in OS lion.

Wrong, you've properly never used any of the above programs
Yep i have i use garage band on a regular basis its very good other apple program are very hit and miss much like windows software
No their not, they are reliable, fast, and don't eat up ram. I can even run them on multiple desktops now, can windows?

Geeks create viruses. Geeks only use windows due to the easy of usage on mac
virus are made by geeks and target vurnable code in operating systems OSX is full of them
My brother has been using mac over 7 years... never experienced a mac virus? Im sure OSx is full of them right?

They don't, have mine a few months now never experienced a crash, Brother has been using macs over 7 years, yet no crash?
    The internet begs to differ
More likely the very unlucky .000001 percentage of mac users or idiots that try to alter the mac.

Apple allows it without voiding the warranty, most Microsoft products you open voids the warranty
Nope considering microsoft dont make laptops. most if not all laptop manufactures allow harddrives, ram and wireless cards.
No they don't, my samsung netboook doesn't allow it.

What?, they do... I press off... Mac turns off within 3 seconds, I press shutdown on windows and I'm waiting over a few minutes after waiting on programs to end.
They don't power off fully they use a very clever Deep Sleep mode system it allows for the os to load a lot quicker all apple products use this in some form or anotherStop waffling, i turn it off, it goes off. End of story.

^^ Definately avoiding that argument... there are pros and cons of both and definately one is not clearly better then the other.

Personally for a college laptop I would be aiming for a thin and light or ultraportable range, namely 13-14 inch laptops.
Some come with a premium price over mainstream 15inch laptops, but the portability and battery life should not be underestimated, particularly carrying it in and out to college everyday. DO NOT BUY A 17 INCH!

In terms of spec, Id personally be looking for a 2nd generation sandybridge core i3, 3-4gb RAM, USB 3.0 and something with +5hrs battery life.

Off the top of my head for style:

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/ASUS_U33JC-RX126V_1008194.html works out about 850 delivered

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Sony_VAIO_VPCCA1S1EG_1042938.html Vaio CA series comes in a variety of colours

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/acer-aspire-timeline-x-4830t-14-laptop-blue-10452243-pdt.html Timeline X series is light and has great battery life

Id also be looking at the asus U range (lots of new models coming out like the U46sv which looks sexy), HP envy 13/14 (if you can find them), maybe the toshiba protege range? Macbook air wouldnt be a bad shout, fabulous screens on them and quite good specs since the refresh...however may quickly spiral in price if you want ram upgrade etc.

    Again style is subjective!

I saw a 6gb Toshiba which was pretty slick looking for sale in Joyces or DID Electrical for €489 which i thought was great value, wasnt even looking for a laptop for myself but had a nose anyway there is defo great value out there at the minute, i reckon anything with 6gb would be pretty much ideal for the standard user

Asus have been a bit slow in getting out second generation i3/i5 over here which is a real shame as the refereshed U series looks a very nice range, the ASUS U31SD-XA1 (available at a very reasonable $649.99 in the US) looks good if it ever shows up here. MSI have some nice looking laptops as well except very few retailers carry them and at that only a fraction of their full range :(.

You might want to look up those products origins most of them were invented before apple produced them they just have a better marketing team

I guarantee you, they don't have the gesture features apple have running in OS lion.
all but one can be done on my dell

No their not, they are reliable, fast, and don't eat up ram. I can even run them on multiple desktops now, can windows?
yep they are all lightweight programs

Annoying really, plenty available in Europe but I guess thats only eligible if you are confident enough to change the keyboard.
