Anyone had a Canon 17-85 repaired?

    Hi all,

Dropped my 17-85 today, and it's not a happy camper now. When zoomed in to 85mm, I can focus freely, but as I turn the barrel to come back to 17mm, the barrel also turns the focus ring with it, and at 17mm, the focus ring can't actually turn past the 'macro' word.

So pretty much, if I'm at 85mm, the lens is perfect, but I assume that when I dropped it, the barrels or somesuch inside the lens must've overlapped or jammed on each other or something, and now I can't focus the whole way unless I'm shooting at 85mm (and I use this lens at the short end most of the time, so I need to get it sorted.

Pretty much, I'm just wondering if anyone's ever had a similar problem with a lens, or had a problem with this exact lens, and would be able to advise at all on cost to get it fixed, or how long I'd be without it whilst it gets fixed?

Also, does anyone know if I should deal with ISS or directly with Canon? The lens was purchased second hand, so no warranty or such.

    Thanks :)

Haven't seen that fault before but impact damage is pretty unpredictable due to the nature of all the variables (distance it fell, angle it landed on, zoom and focus settings at the time, if a camera body was attatched etc...) so guessing the price of a repair for impact damage would be either a wild guess or most likely innacurate if you presumed what had been damaged without knowing.

I can say that the focus group in the 17-85mm is just behind the front element and wouldn't be able to overlap or go out of alignment without physically breaking one of the 3 "nubs" that guide the element it is rotated (moving it back or forward). If one of them was broken it would probably be rattling around and would also be stiff/not focus at any focal length.

Hard to tell without seeing the lens what is causing the fault but first place I would suspect is one of the barrels being warped and causing friction with the focus ring enough to jam it.

If you are interested in getting it repaired PM me and Ill see what I can do.

I would avoid ISS as they don't do repairs, they simply send it to a Canon ASF in the UK and add their own charge if not under warranty and Canon make a lot of money from the repair market.

I gave mine to zerohamster to fix about a year ago and not had a problem since. There is a common fault with this lens and zerohamster can explain that to you.

The service I got from Zerohamster was excellent and I would have no problem recommending him to you
