BLACKSBURG, Va.—A gunman has been reported near a Virginia Tech dining hall, officials said Thursday.

The university issued an alert on its website at 9:37 a.m. Thursday telling students and employees to stay inside and secure doors.

The alert said the gunman was reported near Dietrick Hall, a three-story dining facility. The dining hall is steps away from the dorm where a mass shooting took place in 2007, when a student gunman killed 32 people and then himself.

The school said on its website that three juveniles attending a camp at the school reported seeing a man holding what may have been a handgun. They said it was covered by a cloth or covering of some sort, and that the man was walking in the direction of the volleyball courts.

Officials said they are looking for a white man with light brown hair who is 6 feet tall. Officials said the person is wearing a blue and white-striped shirt, gray shorts and brown sandals. He was described as clean shaven, according to the university's website.

Police from Virginia Tech, Blacksburg and Christiansburg are searching for the man, as well as Montgomery County sheriff's deputies.

    RTE are even covering it!

Officials at Virginia Tech university, scene of the worst school shooting in US history, have locked down the campus after three youths said they saw a white man possibly carrying a handgun.

So far, police have not found anyone matching the description given by the youths, who were attending a camp at the university in Blacksburg, Virginia, but were still patrolling the campus in search of the man.

'People on campus stay indoors until further notice,' the university said in a bulletin on its website.

The university said that at 9:09 am (2.09pm Irish time), the three youths saw a 'white male, six feet tall, with light brown hair outside of New Residence Hall East holding what may have been a handgun.'

'They say the weapon was covered by a cloth or covering of some sort,' the statement said, adding that the suspect was wearing a shirt with blue and white vertical stripes, gray shorts and brown sandals.

'Officers responded immediately to the area but found no one matching the description. Police have encountered no other witnesses reporting this individual or anything suspicious,' the university said.

Local television station WSLS reported that the campus siren system had been activated.

The fall semester has not yet begun, though summer programs are in session.

In 2007, Cho Seung-Hui, a 23-year-old Virginia Tech student born in South Korea, shot to death 32 fellow classmates and teachers before killing himself.

The university in Blacksburg, Virginia was fined $55,000 in relation to the 16 April, 2007 incident for failing to alert students in time that a gunman was loose on the campus.

Early this morning, three kids attending a camp at the university told authorities that they saw a white male, six feet tall with light brown hair holding what may have been a gun, said Mark Owczarski, a campus spokesman.

The kids said the weapon was covered by a cloth. The man was wearing a blue and white striped shirt, gray shorts and brown sandals, Owczarski said.

    Source.

In reality, he could have been carrying something completely innocuous, and there was just a kneejerk reaction.

If guns were allowed one of the 3 students who saw the guy carrying something suspicious could have shot him. Would have prevented a possible shooting.

They should just abort all fetuses, in about 80 years there'd be very few shootings.

The guys at my school were seriously bummed about having to check their firearms in with the campus police after the Virginia Tech shootings

To prevent a possible shooting they could have er....shot him

    Does not compute

What if something suspicious then turns out to have been something entirely innocent/harmless

NO NO NO listen to the previous poster.

They should allow all foetuses to carry guns so that they can shoot the abortionists (or anyone in a white coat that might look like an abortionist).

49 States in the country permit people to legally carry firearms around in their daily business. Every one of those people could shoot someone else. They tend not to without cause.

There are, as best I can recall, only two instances where there was an attempt at a mass shooting at a university where guns were allowed: U-Texas, Austin, and Appalachian School of Law, Virginia. In both cases, students with legal firearms showed up and limited the casualty counts.
