Hi, I have been trying to write the IPD section of my report for the title of chartered engineer for the last month and really struggling as to how to start and how to incorporate all the competences. Can any one offer me some advise so I can just get started. Thanking you in advance.

The report should be written in chronological order of your career but a good way to start before even doing this is to write down the five main competences required and to jot down next to each of them where in your career/experience you feel you’ve demonstrated that competence, for example…… in 2004 I was responsible for the public consultation phase of this project where I demonstrated my communication skills by……… When you’ve done that you can use this as guidance so you remember exactly where you’ve demonstrated the competences in each stage of your career.

    Hope this helps!

Okay Thanks for the advise. I'll try and get it started using your advise. Two questions...1) Is there a live forum for people trying to complete the IPD and also 2) If I submit the report early October when will I know the report has been accepted. I know the handbook says the review day is Feb 4th but was hoping applicants would know if there report was accepted prior to that date.

    Regards:D

We will be running a number of Chartership info evenings from Sept around the country.
Also the Young Engineers Society run informal evenings where people can discuss their application or how they are getting on with the process.
YES contact details can be found on our website.

Info evenings will be listed on our weekly events brief once they have been confirmed.

When you submit your report, you will receive a receipt to confirm we have received it but alas reports cannot be reviewed until Feb due to the assessors availability. Sorry

I can get the membership department to give you a bell to discuss further if you want to DM your details?

(leaving the office now so will be tomorrow before I can respond if you reply to this)

OP, for my report I also set up a margin and noted in where I'd hit a core competence in a paragraph - it was a good check for me when I was making sure I'd covered all bases, and I suppose it might have been useful for a reviewer also.

Good luck with the report and review...

    A few questions for EngIreland:

    Competence 1
Use a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding to optimise the application of existing and emerging knowledge

Can you give a few examples of a good answer as this seems kind of vague?

    Competence 2
Apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to the analysis and solution of engineering problems

    ok

    Competence 3
    Provide technical,commercial and managerial leadership

    ok

    Competence 4
Use effective communication and interpersonal skills

    Do you want specific examples?

    Competence 5
Make a personal commitment to abide by the appropriate code of professional conduct, recognising obligations to society, the profession and the environment

How can personal commitment be demonstrated? Again can you give a few examples of a good answer please.

    Many Thanks

This should help you answer your questions on the competencies for the IPD report.

let me know if you are still unclear.

When linking IPD is it necessary to meet all the sub-competences or just the main competences?

    @s20101938

If the detail of your main competences cover the sub-competences then that should be fine if not you will have to go into details on the sub-competences also.

If you wish I can get a member of the Chartered Engineer applications to give you a bell to talk to you on your queries as they can go into greater detail.

Also there is a number of Chartered Engineer info days coming up across Ireland - Limerick on the 30th Nov and Kilkenny on the 6th Dec - where you can attend and get any queries answered.

Anyhoo let me know if you would like someone to give you a call - DM your contact details.

Are the subcompetences defined as in the Chartered Regulations (1.1(a), 1.1(b) etc), or as in the guidelines you linked (which says 1a, 1b etc)?

    Hey @s20101938

Can you DM me your contact number and I will get someone to call you to answer your query?

Ideally you are following the Chartered Regulations and the guidelines are just that, guidelines so best to focus on the Regs.

Lest there is any confusion, it would be great if I could get a someone to speak with you over the phone to iron out any queries you have.

Anyone else burning the CEng application midnight oil?

    Indeed.

Don't go above 4,000 words in the IPD! I had to edit and reprint mine.

have to cull 260 odd words from the report (all too easy to go over!), and then do my two essays, and lay out my application form. not a lot to do at all!
