HI , I was just reading a thread there about how much grocery shopping comes to ,a few people talked about schools healthy lunch policies , and added a few tips which I was delighted to read .
My third child will be starting school in September and she's a bit of a fussy eater , also my other two seem to get bored of lunches or don't even take them out as they think they're not allowed them , (liga milky biscuits ) . I do find it hard to keep the kids happy with lunches whilst also keeping the school happy too, so I would be greatful of other parent's ideas :)

    lunches :
    crackers with jam/cheese
    sandwich tuna/jam/ham/cheese
    breadroll
fruit/bananna,apple , satsumas (not allowed kiwis or nuts)
    poporn
    (not allowed yogurts)
    liga biscuits

I'm finding it kind of limited , I need some ideas people :(

*note - my daughter isnt in school yet so just going on what i like for lunches myself :)

How about trying different varieties of bread and things? Maybe pitta breads/bagels/baps/soda bread as opposed to just a sliced pan or roll?

For fillings leftover meat from dinner with cheese and salad maybe? I also find that leftover pasta and sauce or any kind of pasta bake is really nice cold for lunch too.

How about soup in a small flask with some brown bread and cheese?

On the fruit/ veg side of things how about trying orange grapefruit and melon segments in a small tub? Or any type of fruit salad like that really. Also chopped pieces of raw carrot/pepper/cucumber/celery/tomato or whatever veg your kids like!

    Just a few suggestions :)

Can I just enquire why Kiwis are banned? Just curious.

I can understand the nut rule... allergies and choking etc.

My big girl is only 2 but they need lunch for play school.

Normally she gets 1 or some of the following -
    crackers,cheese,a yogurt,raisins,a banana,scones.

Kiwi allergy can be as severe as nut allergy... hence the need to ban them, some schools ban egg products as you can get a reaction of it born through the air also.

I never knew that. I was a walking minefield in school. I ate two a day.

I won't hijack the thread any further. Interesting info all the same. :D

No bother, they don't usually ban stuff like that from the school unless someone is known to have an allergy to it... not every school bans nuts etc but it's easier for a blanket ban on things like that than to have the risk there too.

Have you tried savory scones? Cheese and bacon ones were my daughters fav's for a while (2-5 class).
Also wraps if they'll eat them, try different fillings, and mayo's (branston do a sweet chilli one that is a big hit in my house).
Pasta is good too, add peas, carrots, sweet corn, chicken etc, (whatever they'll eat), or an egg fried rice type dish, veggies stir fried with rice added and little soy sauce. (chicken or pork can be added too)
In the winter I have made soups, I got a wide mouth food flask and my daughter loved the hot soup and a small bread roll.

Just keep the soups until the child is older, I think my girl was 9 or so when she first tried this.

Our school has a ban on nuts and fish, plus a healthy eating policy which means no biscuits, sweets etc.

I tend to give sandwiches, rolls, tortillas ( filled), pancakes ) filled) or pasta salad mainly. Soup is too messy as they are too young yet.

Then a piece of fruit and a snack of some kind- usually cheese, popcorn ( homemade, no salt, no butter) or crackers. Sometimes we make homemade madelines or fairy cakes ( no icing) and these are also allowed as snacks. Or scones.

my little man has quite restricted tastes when it comes to packed lunches and will usually only take ham sandwiches, choc sprd s/wiches or cheese at a push. he will either take a banana or some carrot sticks. he always says he never has much time to eat anything more. they only seem to get 15mins before going outside to play. I don't worry about it too much as he eats well when he gets home thankfully! He does get a carton of milk at school each day as well.

My little one says the same Angeldaisy, that he's no time to eat but luckily like your son he eats well when he's at home. Often he won't eat all of his lunch but his 1 year old sister loves raiding his lunchbox for leftovers when he gets home :)

I don't really give my son sandwiches because he doesn't like ham or tuna and I don't give him chocolate spread or jam because I would rather give him a treat after his dinner instead.

Normally he'd have either a bread roll with just butter or a breadroll pizza or brown bread with butter.

He'd also take either a banana and mandarin or one of those apple fruit bags from Tesco.

He sometimes takes chunks of cheese or actimels and then he'd have milk and water too.

What do you guys think of those Belvita breakfast biscuits for a change some day for lunch?

    Pasta with sweetcorn and tuna
    brown bread and banana
sunday roast sandwiches, sometimes i cook an extra chicken and use it for sandwiches or pieces with pasta.
    Wraps
fruit salad (i love fruit salads and usually make a big bowl to do a few days)
    Apples
Yoghurt (frubes are great no need for a spoon that will usually get lost )
Little stars jelly (mine love jelly)
Generally if there's an allergy issue there's a note sent home not to send in a particular food.
Our school has a healthy lunch policy too. I know there's loads more but being on summer holidays (with baby brain) i've forgotten half of what i send with them :D
