A few of my friends not only had their tuition paid by government grants, they received something like 3 cheques of around $2000 over the course of the year. I didn't need financial aid so far but I will next year so I'm wondering how I go about getting it. What are the steps involved?

You would have to have filled out the appropriate papper work with your local VEC for a maintenance grant, and sent of some documents showing your income level.

Here you go, you download the form, fill it in and bring it in to your local court house with all the relevant documentation. Well, all the instructions are on that website :)

Oh, be quick though, some of the documentation is rather difficult to obtain, and the closing date is August 31st.

Aye, big clampdown on cheats etc.

Student Support Act 2011 gives the Dept Education the power to pass all your info/documentation to government departments and public bodies for example, the Revenue Commissioners, the Department of Social Protection, the Department of Justice and Equality and further and higher education institutions.
The awarding authority and the Department of Education and Skills have a duty to protect public funds and may use the information you give to prevent and detect fraud by giving information to the relevant authorities if appropriate or necessary.
