Just seen on twitter and confirmed on racingpost.com that Canford Cliffs sustained an injury when chasing Frankel home and has been retired to stud.

Yet another reason people will have to detract from frankels victory now, A shame really for such a good horse to be retired. Now we'll have to listen to hannon going on about how he would have beat him next time

Great shame, he was an outstanding miler. Pity we will never see a rematch with Frankel or Goldikova.

I think thats unfair on hannon mate, he said "He's been a fantastic horse for the yard. Hes won 5 group ones - you cant do anymore than that"

Unlikely he will start waffling about Frankel.

Shame for Hannon imo, Turpin is not the horse he was and now Canford is gone from him.

Such a pity we won't get to see a rematch.

A rested, injury healed and freshened-up Canford taking on Frankel again would have been one to realy look forward to. Though I think Frankel would probably still beat him again.

Owners and connections can have no complaints though, he gave them some great days (and will most likely enhance their bank accounts very nicely too when he goes to stud).

Such a pity,I know some new fans of racing who would factor Canford Cliffs as one of their reasons of getting into the sport.

Personally I think Hes retired so that He doesnt have to face Frankel again, I think it would have been the same if Frankel had lost, He would have gone to stud aswell, one loss isnt that bad but if He kept trying and losing surely would affect his stud fees!

    (Post, not poster)

This is such a load of bollocks! Hannon would never duck Frankel and the owners wouldn't either. They know how good their horse is and know that Frankel is a freak of nature. They have the second best miler for a long, long, long time. Being beaten by a machine wouldn't reduce his stud value by that much. If anything they would be keen to race Frankel again to show they can get closer to him than they did at Goodwood.

Conspiracy theorists are going to be busy for the next few weeks...

But if they know how good He is why did they keep saying he would beat him, Granted He is a mile ahead of the other horses at the distance and probably could get closer to Frankel I just never see him beating him, saying that I really cant see the value of racing and losing when the prize money for the racing wouldnt match up to the stud fees, But hey I wish he did I love a good F.C. But my knowledge of racing is sketchy at best its just how I saw it!

This is a quote from the Betfair forum (Breeding & Bloodstock forum)
Well well........I wonder if the Coolmore PR department have been working overtime on coming up with a feesable excuss for retirement, could it be the case that they know full well from what we have all seen good as CC is he is no match for Frankle.Getting Hannon's star miler stuffed again will do nothing to enhance his next job.Reading the press report sounds to me as though it was written by the same man that does Aiden's,and has Richard Hughes forgotten he rode Oasis Dream.......now he reckons CC is the fastest horse he has ever ridden.Just thinking back I remember Richard Hannon saying the next day "the horse is fine he's come out of the race sound and scoped clean this morning we are at a loss"...........imo the plain fact is he was well beaten and they were surprised just how easily.Hence this story today.

I'd be lying if I said the same didn't cross my mind for a split second but I was surely being over cynical

Don't think it's a load of bollocks Nulty. Alright he may well be injured but I think they would have avoided a rematch with him. Remember, the owners are having their hands pressed by Coolmore.

Regarding people saying he'll lose his stud value, his stud value will be pretty low anyway. Look at his breeding,I don't see him producing champions. Frankly,I'm surprised Coolmore even bought him, even if they did pay peanuts. That said, people will jump on the band wagon at a low kind of fee(not more than 15,000 I'd say,low for a Coolmore hot pot,and less than Rip Van Winkle who he beat comfortably),that is for two or three breeding seasons until his runners hit the track.
However,he'll probably be in the same stallion league as the likes of Footstepsinthesand,Oratorio or the other Coolmore lightweights.

Harsh yes, Unfair no. I've no time for the hannon team whatsoever. Their comments in the lead up to the "duel on the downs" were not only disrespectful but simply stupid. No class.

I don't know just seems strange to me, The horse was fine after the race according to hughes. Was entered in the QE11 as well with a story on RP yesterday. Surely this would have came to light sooner, And how bad could the injury have been he still beat RDLP by 2 1/2 lengths and he's hung before.

Well he didn't run up to his previous form with Rio De Le Plata in the Sussex , he only beat it by 2 1/2 lengths and looked in some kind of trouble as he wandered across the track , in the Queen Anne he beat the same horse 5 lengths easily . Even at that Frankel would have beat him on his Queen Anne form and Frankel looked like he had plenty left in the locker .

To be honest i might have some respect for someone if they could at least get the horses name right its Frankel. People are being harsh here Frankel is a freak of nature. I dont think the real CC turned up that day for whatever reason, but i still dont think he could beat Frankel giving him weight if they ran again. But i think he would have beat Goldikova in the breeders cup pity was hoping that would be his last race. Alot of people really are letting 1 bad race by a very good horse cloud their judgement. If Frankel was not around people would be raving about CC. Its just a pity alot of people are forgetting how good CC is/was. Pity he ran into probably the best miler we could ever see.

Canford drifted across badly and did not quicken like he can, I don't believe the injury is waffle.

By the way a scope is a check of the lungs, it is entirely possible he came out of the race well but when they tried to gallop him at home he might have reacted and they xrayed him as a result and picked up the injury.

That said it would be a big ask for him to beat Frankel even at level weights.

Gutted I won't see Canny race again. A majestic horse who did his yard and connections proud. He was beaten by a better horse in Frankel but that doesn't tarnish his achievements imo. Adios Canford

I gotta say that that the thought did cross my mind.

Pity to see him gone but I don't think he'd be beating Frankel even with a head start!!!
