Social Welfare Statement Problem!!!!!

One of the requirements for the student grant, as I'm sure you'll know is a statement of earnings. So for me this means getting a statement from the social. Well for the love of me I've been unsuccessful In getting it. I've known for a while id be going to university so the minute the grant process was opened I applied.

Surely its not hard to get, I can see the information up on the computer everytime I go in!!! If anybody has any advice that would be great as Im getting a bit concerned here. You think they'd understand Im trying to make something with my life instead if staying on the dole but its obviously naive to think they care. I've asked 4times and the grant closes in basically 2weeks . :-(

    Thanks

The council confirmed they need the statement from the social welfare for the grant.

Tried them again today and this is pretty much a direct quote once asked how long it will take.

"(inaudible moan) We are really busy as everybody is asking for the statements at the moment. Therefore I can't tell you how long it could be."

Its not a surprise people are going to want this so all that comes to mind is what the hell are they playing at! You think they'd understand your trying to better yourself and get off the fecking dole. I won't be surprised if my back to education its approved no earlier than 2017!!!!!!

Don't panic. Since you have already asked for a statement then it's no longer your problem!

They say it closes in August but When I was going to college I opened mine in September and the application was accepted, I actually thought that this was the only time you could open a grant..ie after getting an offer.

If you are applying for BTEA then you will only need the registration fees to be paid by the grant awarding authority and in this case all you will need is a letter from VEC, stating that your application is in the process of being processed or something to that effect and they will allow you register with a letter from VEC.

Once you get an offer, go to VEC, tell them you have requested a statement and are awaiting its arrival. They will then give you a letter for registration purposes and then once registered you can apply for BTEA. Then when the statement arrives you give it into VEC and they will pay the Fees.

Don't panic and hope this helps.

My advice would be to go in every day until somebody does something for you. To get public servants in this country to do anything it seems you have to be in their face all the time or else have a breakdown in front of them. I got my wife's statement of income from social welfare from last year for her grant application by basically implying that i wasn't leaving until I got it. The woman who was trying to fob me off by saying that she had requested it from Dublin blah blah blah etc eventually just sat in front of me and wrote it down from a screen. It's not complicated, they are just inheritantly lazy. I worked in the civil service social welfare department for 4 months a few years ago and was told to slow down as I was working too fast. Totally indicative of the work ethic in these places.

Have you tried applying online for a statement?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I found last year they took 8 weeks to get it for me so I got mine for this years grant at easter so it wouldn't get delayed.

I'll be going in to ask for mine on Monday, will they not just give it to me when I go into them? or will I have to wait for them to send it to me?

No,they will tell you they will post it out...be sure to stress how much you need it

Thanks for the reply, would it be quicker to apply for it online do you think? or would it be best just to go into them? Thanks

I went to the link given in this thread to apply for it online, but it doesn't give JSA as an option? it only gives JSB?

My dad just asked in the office. They sent out a little piece of paper saying he was on whatever, hand written and all, had it within a week.
They accepted that for my grant application

No defo go in...it's too easy for them to make excuses if you do it online..at least face to face they know you need it ASAP...and make sure she knows it

I spent ages trying to get my statement of income from them, must have applied about 3 times online and 3 times in person from before the grant forms came out.

Sent off a complaint to them on their website a week ago and my statement of income came a few days ago.

So my advice to anyone waiting a ridiculous amount of time, complain.

You can get it online, I'm just away from my computer at the minute so can't give you the exact link.

Thanks for all the great advice. I'm just going to keep giving out till they give me my statement. Definitely applying earlier next year.

    So https://www.welfare.ie/EN/Secure/Pages/OnlineServices.aspx/

Scroll down to request a statement. Click on the link saying customers of certain social offices can request a link. Then just look for your local office. Hope this helps.

what response have you received when you call to their office Darius.Tr

I went into my local SWO and they gave me the letter straight away.. I'd suggest going into them rather than requesting a letter online and waiting for them to post it out.

I rang my Local SW office, they just printed off all my sw payments and highlighted payments for 2010 and stamped it . I had it in the post the following day. Either ring the local office or call in , it is standard procedure the lovely lady said on the phone. Still waiting from word back about my grant for payment of registration fees.

They just keep saying that they are not allowed to issue those documents themselfs, that there are loads of people waiting for those documents and that it will be send to me within a few days. It's been about a month now since my first visit at the Social Welfare Office.

Just go into the office, tell them to print off all your sw payments for the past 2 years and ask them to stamp it with their office stamp

online requests only applies to jobseekers benefit for tax purposes - if its for any other reason message goes to your local office notifying them you require a statement. also, only record of jobseekers benefit remains on screen for last year any other payment has to be done up manually

Wow, that's a load of crap. I went into the Wexford social welfare asking for a statement for my jobseekers and my dads invalidity payments. I had mine the next day and his three days later! There has to be something wrong there!

I just got my dads statement today, it took a while though... :)

I had the same problem ,so i rang my VEC and they said to send in as much of the asked for documentation (exam results, proof of being in the country the last few years) that i had and things that i'm waiting on like the social letter can be sent in when i get them. They said this would get my application on the road and mean i wouldnt be the bottom of the pile come september when they are trying to get all the grants sorted!
So i did that and the next day the letter from the social arrived :p

I got mine a few weeks ago. It was the same week I filed two complaints, one with the Minister for social protection so maybe that was a coincidence, I dont know. The joke is its a hand written piece of paper that probably took seconds to write out.

Have I been naive in thinking the grant would cover my student service charge in time? Spoke to the university (DCU) and they informed me that if I dont have a letter of approval from my local VEC by the time I register then I have to pay the fees personally. It would of been nice if my careers adviser mentioned this when I started seeing her almost a year ago! I'm sure I speak for most people when I say I dont have money (2000) just laying around. I hope people don't lose the chance to gain the qualifications they have worked so hard for due to inadequacy from the social!
