Have no confidence in any of the current nominees...what are the chances of persuading Olivia O'Leary to run or is there so much negativity about that anyone who runs is open to huge pressure and nasty campaign stuff?? I think Olivia is real, has great command of language and could offer something new! Really cant be doing with retired politicians!!!!

Sean Gallagher?? Fiann Fail meeets Dragons Den...what s he there for? Michael D?? A whole life playing the politics game and offering nothing new? Gay Mitchell...Ditto... Have always admired how Olivia speaks her mind...even if it makes people uncomfortable! Otherwise I want a canditate who will say this office is of no use and a waste of money we dnt have but maybe I'm cynical!!!

I must say that I'd like to get to know about Mary Davis a bit more. Seems like a good candidate. Better than the rest as of now.

Mr Byrne has gone out as earned his crust as a self employed person while those who hop from the cushy little numbers in University to the equally cushy little numbers in the Senate accumulating several defined benefits pensions to be paid for by the taxpayer.
Mt Byrne has taken repsonsibility for his own pensions as he has recently explained.

I think Ms O'Leary would be a great Uachtarán but failing that how about Prof Morgan Kelly?

Ray... Ray D'arcy... is it yourself?

As for Olivia O'Leary, no I don't think she's a suitable candidate. Olivia O'Leary has spent many years in Leinster House where she has had close friendships with our political representatives, yet without always writing in the journalistic style that typically condemns or exposes these politicians' failures. This is in stark contrast to most media professionals, or even politicians themselves, who operate in more aggressive styles.

I think candidates are better chosen from individuals who are not necessarily part of the political establishment - or where they are of the establishment, that they would have shown themselves to have been capable of dissenting and showing ethical wisdom and professional courage throughout their careers.

Olivia O'Leary has largely shoved her hands in her pockets and shrugged at the Irish political system.
She may have done so in a vivid, coherent, and eloquent manner - but that suggests a greater suitability for teaching English to schoolchildren than leading a country and protecting its constitution.

Sure but it's all relative though, is she any worse or equal to a rabid anti-abortionist and a man with a habit of outspoken criticism of the foreign policies of some our more important trading partners? I mean, the bar for her to get over is pretty bloody low.

    Any Thoughts on Morgan Kelly?

Well, your Granny is probably more suitable than those particular candidates, so if it is a contest to see "who's a bit better than Dana" then Olivia O'Leary (and presumably your Granny) both win.

However, it isn't that sort of competition. I don't believe Olivia O'Leary is within the higher calibre of possible candidates that have been mentioned, some of whom are happily free of Irish political involvement, and others who have links to the political establishment, but who have at least demonstrated an ability to draw swords with the political establishment nevertheless.

Would it stop him spouting reclusive nonsense in the Irish Times?

If so, I'll do free leaflet drops.

Dear Jesus, I know this is a bump but there is a thread higher than this about Amanda bunker for president, that can't be right.
