    Anybody have any opinions

Edit: See it on the xtreamer web site for a few quid less than the Ibood price but that price exclude import duty and VAT: http://shop.xtreamer.net/products/Xtreamer-Ultra.html

Ibood are worse than pixmania.Never again would I waste my time with them.

Value is nothing special, not a rip-off but you can do better if you try. It's just an Ion nettop with a few accessories.

    This is better value:
    http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/eMachines_ER1401_1098795.html

Processor is about the same as a dual-core Atom, Nvidia 9200 is good enough to play 1080p H264, comes with a HDD unlike the Xtreamer, and it also has a Win7 licence which will make setup a lot easier for regular users.

    That's on ebuyer for £129.00

Use http://www.deliverme.ie/ to get it here.

EDIT: only 2GB RAM / 250 HDD on ebuyer machine

Aside from less ram and smaller HDD, the ebuyer machine has no keyboard/mouse at all and doesnt come with Win7.

If you have those things already (or don't want them) then for sure go for the ebuyer machine.

but the ibood one says there is no os included, just the drivers on a stick?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

it has a linux OS included.

it's basically an Acer Revo with a Rii mini keyboard and mouse, but for more money.

also worth noting that all these systems are limited (by the chipset) to using 3.25gb of RAM, minus whatever you assign to the Gfx card (which you'll want to be 512mb for HD playback) so you're not actually getting anywhere near 4gb for the OS.

buy a Revo & a Rii and you have the same thing (with an internal HDD) for less monies. :)

If you look at "What's in the package" you will see it comes with no HDD.

indeed. it comes with a linux distro installed on a usb stick that it boots off.

you could fit a 2.5" laptop hdd internally if you wanted to install windows on it, but an Acer Revo is going to be a much better buy whichever way you slice it.

its all academic now though as of 11pm, since it's no longer on ibood. :)

just a question about ibood, can they be trusted?
a lot of people on their "product forum" are saying their products turned up "dead" and are reporting other problems so im sceptical.

I've bought stuff from them, had no issues, maybe delivery could be quicker. Like anything else that costs money only worth it if the deal is right.

Not that it matters now ..... but I think you may be mistaken.

Surely it is a limitation of the OS used ..... 32 bit Windows (unless specific business OS) is limited in the memory it can address, but 64 bit Windows should see the whole 4GB .... and not the hardware/firmware.

32 bit Linux can use the 4GB when using a pae kernel.

    regards

    nope, afraid not. :)

when you're talking about most systems yes, but atom based systems are a little crippled.

originally, they were supposed to be limited to using 2gb of RAM when the netbook standard was first devised, but nettops appear to have increased that to 4gb with *some* limitations.

you can put however much RAM you want in it but the most you will ever see in any OS, be it 64 bit windows or Linux is 3.25gb of (usuable) RAM within the OS assuming you assign 256mb to the gfx card, or 3gb if you assign 512mb to the gfx.

this goes into a little detail about it here: http://acer--uk.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3432/~/aspire-revo-r3600-or-r3610-recognizes-3gb-of-ram

it's a post specific to the Acer Revo, but afaik it goes for all atom based nettops.

I have no experience of those devices at all ..... but it seems to me the R3600 series use a different CPU to the Extreme Ultra ..... Intel Atom N230 1.6 Ghz Vs dual-core atom D525 clocked at 1.82Ghz ......
Maybe the CPU memory addressing limitation does not apply to the other CPU?

    As said .... I don't know .... just wondering .... ;)

the early R3600's were single core atom's, but the R3610 (which is the one I have) uses a dual core atom.

the way it was described to me was that the limitation was with the way the atom chipset handled memory addressing, not with the cpu itself, but i suppose it's possible that the issue has been resolved if the newest atom's use a modified chipset (which i think they might), although i actually can't say for 100% definite either way.

Thanks ..... it is something that would need to be checked if a device with such a chipset was being considered.

If you find anything definitive please post again.

I had found a reference to Win64 using the full 4GB someplace but could not relocate the page unfortunately .... that was with the newer CPU

actually, now that i think about it there's a thread knocking around here somewhere about a HP microserver which is Atom based and i'm pretty sure some of them have been loading them up with RAM, so it might be worth a look there.
