    Hi Guys

I know i have posted this problem before but im going to try it again one last time before i ditch the whole programme .

I have Guitar Pro 5.2 and cant get any sound out of it on any of the tracks . I have tried contacting the provider "Arobas Music" but they just fob me off or dont reply , i have posted this question on the forum on their website but dont get any reply , in short its a piss poor performance from a company that has my money and doesnt offer any kind of back up service .

I have gone so far as to reinstall the programme but im still having the same problem , visably the tracks are playing fine just no f****ng sound , i have played around with the settings on my laptop and the programme but still no joy . Im obviously missing something on the GP programme , CAN ANYONE HELP as this is a major inconvienance to me at the moment.

    Cheers

Check the PC volume settings, make sure SW Synth volume is up.

To be fair to Arobas it's impossible for them to test all of the millions of possible hardware configurations out there. With that said, I've found their support staff to be less than supportive at times too. Then again they are French.... ;)

    Anyway,
Do you get sound when you change the output of Guitar Pro from RSE to MIDI?
Do you get sound when you enter notes in the editor?
Do you get any error messages from Guitar Pro?
Do you get sound from Windows itself e.g. does the audio come through from YouTube videos or games?
Have you downloaded GP6 and tried that? You can download a free trial which you can subsequently delete if it doesn't output any sound either.

I'll take a look at GP5 in more detail this evening to see if there's anything obvious in the configuration screens.

Okay here are some screenshots of my working GP5 installation. See if there are any settings different to yours.

Forgot to mention I'm running Windows 7 at the moment but the same computer ran Windows Vista when I got it first and I had no problems with GP5 apart from the memory violation problem I wrote about previously.

    Hi Malice

I cant do a screen shot of my set up on the forum . I can do it on a word document but i know its open to corruption on the site. Everything is identical except for in your Midi outputs , on port device, you have "microsoft wavetable synth" i cant get this i have "none"

    To answer your other questions

Do you get sound when you change the output of Guitar Pro from RSE to MIDI? ( NO I DONT)

Do you get sound when you enter notes in the editor? (NO I DONT)

Do you get any error messages from Guitar Pro? (NO I DONT)

Do you get sound from Windows itself e.g. does the audio come through from YouTube videos or games? (YES IT DOES)

Have you downloaded GP6 and tried that? You can download a free trial which you can subsequently delete if it doesn't output any sound either. (NO I HAVENT) . I have downloaded it to a memory stick with a view to trying it but havent got around to it yet .

Also where on the computer can i find the "SW Synth" application ?

I'd say thats your problem. You should have a generic sound generator that came with your windows install, it should be an option there. If you don't have any output device selected you won't get any sound.
Also, have you tried tuxguitar? I used to use GP but tuxguitar is free and has pretty much all the same options and can open power tabs too. I just use that instead and I'm very happy with it.

I'll let Yakult answer that as I'm not quite sure what was meant :).

Yeah, I agree with this but it is very odd that the RSE option doesn't produce any sound either as it's separate to MIDI and if he is getting audio from other Windows applications then the soundcard driver is presumably working fine.

What kind of sound card have you got bayles?

While it does share some functionality with Guitar Pro 5 I find it very fiddly to use and it seems to be missing a lot of stuff.

No worries.I was hoping you'd resolved it in the mean time. There are a few different ways tTo see what kind of sound card you've got. Try clicking Start -> Control Panel -> Hardware & Sound -> Manage Audio Devices. Chances are you should see something like "Realtek High Definitio Audio" listed.

If you download a midi file from the Internet, will it play?

It seems bayles gets no sound when trying MIDI instead of RSE:

Yeah, but I was trying to work out was ALL midi not working, or just the midi within Guitar Pro... If midi files playback, then there is nothing wrong with either the playback of midi on the soundcard, nor with the volume setting being set too low.. You could then isolate the problem to being within the program itself..

Good points actually. We have established that he gets some noise from Windows itself, but not specifically MIDI:

I got "realtic digital output" listed when i go into those options . I also have an option for speakers listed . I have tried downloading a midi file as johnathanon suggested and it played no problem so im completly stumped its obviously the GP programme

Damn it, I hate when stuff like this happens! It's probably something obvious that I can't think of. Just to recap, you do have the same stuff listed on the settings page like in the screenshot I posted except for the Wavetable Synth and you're not using the RSE? That would probably explain why you're getting no sound but the question is why that is happening. Is there anything to select when you click through the MIDI outputs? Do you have anything else connected to your computer that might have taken over the output? For example, I can use my PodXT as an output device if I connect it via USB.
Lastly, and I know it's a cop-out, but have you tried searching or posting in the Guitar Pro forum?

    Hi Malice

I know its been a while since i posted here but i have been still trying to sort out this issue with GP and i think i may have isolated the problem , the thing now is how to resolve it . I have been getting some replies from Arobas albeit days and sometimes weeks apart , i think the guy who is replying to me must have hundreds of issues and operates on a convayor system so replies only come around once every so often .

If you go into midi/rse settings and look at (midi output-port devices) in channel 1 you probably have something like "wavetable synth" and in (midi input-device) you should have something there also , well i dont ? and arobas dont seem to be able to say why or give me an answer yet as how to get around it . I would be fairly sure if i can get this on to the programme it will fix the issue . I downloaded the demo of GP6 and it works perfectly but to be honest i think i prefare GP5 . Reviews of GP6 are not great and most people seem to think its flawed and was released too early .

If you got any ideas on how to get around this "wavetable synth" thing i would love to hear them , I have also come to the conclusion that "wavetable synth" and "swmidi" are the same thing  from the digging i have done .

    Cheers

I meant to add , i downloaded the link at the bottom of this PDF but it has made no difference http://tanageraudioworks.com/Datasheets/Microsoft_GS_Wavetable_Synth_Issues.pdf

    Hi bayles,

Apologies, I haven't had a chance to respond until now. I see from your other thread that you've got a potential solution as described here. Unfortunately that's for XP and you have Vista so I imagine the registry paths will be different. They are definitely different on Windows 7.

Have you downloaded the latest service pack for Vista or installed the latest version of DirectX?

Failing all of that if RSE is working then I would just stick with that, it sounds far better.

Have you ever gotten sound out of it?
Is the icon on the top left red or green?

The first time you use guitar pro you will need to download all the instrument files (soundbanks) in an update, which takes a while but I had an hour of thinking arggghhhh no sound... similar to yourself before realizing it just needed an update. Go to help and update guitar pro and it should launch an updater and sort your problem..

Then start searching on ultimate-guitar and you will find lots of free tabs for you to enjoy.. it's also easy to create your own.. I'm doing some as I learn.. It's cool.

    Hope that helps

You only need to do this if you want to use the RSE sounds. If you don't download the sound files you can still use MIDI for sound output.

i was not able to get it to work with midi myself and think the soundbank sounds do sound a tad better.. worth a try anyway

The RSE sounds are far superior to plain old MIDI but they do require more processing power from the computer and the aforementioned hefty download.
