    Anyone tried this ?
It'd be a P4 1.5Ghz with 1GB RAM, only needed for browsing and light work ?

    Am I crazy ?

You machine would just about satisfy Microsoft's usually optimistic minimum specs.

you would need a valid windows 7 license which would be worth far more than the machine

Both true folks, I was just wondering if someone had done it.
The bare CPU and RAM figures seem to be close to a netbook I have that runs 7 fine, although the bits in the netbook would be more up to date - I'm thinking faster RAM ? Would that make a big difference ?

What about this bit -DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver?

A student upgrade is available for under 50 to win 7 pro.

I thought of upgrading some basic windows xp machines to 7 to enable password protected file sharing but ditched the idea so I ve no idea if it would work or not. Why slow your pc down with 7, xp would run much faster anyway?

Don't have a licence for XP. I just like 7 is all - was going to use it as a mini NAS/media player.
I know there are Unix based alternatives (FreeNAS or even Xubuntu) but Widows 7 would probably be less hassle and more accessible for the family.
