    You can indeed.
Don't think you even need to buy it, just go into a Meteor shop with your current SIM and some photo ID and they should just replace it there and then.

Yep, go to a meteor store (not a carphonewarehouse) and bring your most recent bill and some ID, and the lads will happily get you set up on a Micro Sim.

i got 2 from a meteor shop yesterday with no ID and no Bill.
just go in and ask for a blank microsim, Talbot Street seemed to have few.

I am planning to get an iPhone 4 but I'm not sure about this micro sim thing... All micro sims seem to be on a contract in Ireland. Is there such a thing as a prepay micro sim???

I am already on a contract with Three for Broadband, must have it for 18 months and really sorry I got it as the service is bad and now I'm stuck with them so the last thing I want is another contract.

If all iPhones 4 only work with micro sims and micro sims are only available on contract, does this also mean that I cannot get an iPhone 4 without having to sign a contract???

    Please advise.

    Thanks,

    RPM.

A micro sim has nothing to do with a contract. It's just a sim. iPhones are mainly contracts and iPhones take micro sims. That's the connection.

You can get an iPhone on PayG, but don't expect to have much change from 600e buying in a shop.

I happened to come across some websites on the several irish networks and there is actually a Pay As You Go tariff available on Vodafone however this works out at 99c per day for Data which will result in at least 30 euros per month only to have an iPhone... Then also you have to think of the out of network calls and texts so in the end the E35 or E40 monthly contract ends up being better because you get more data allowance etc...

I did not know it was so inescapably expensive to have an iPhone!

There's a deal with Tesco of all people, top by a tenner, they give you a tenner then buy 1gb for 6.99 and you've 13 euro left for text and calls.

By that rationale it's inescapably expensive to have any smart phone. You only have to pay as much as you want if you're not on a contract. I have an iPhone on Vodafone prepay and spend next to nothing on credit.

Is that an iPhone 3 or 4 may I ask?

The reason I ask this is because I know well that if I got an iPhone 3 I would be able to continue on the GREAT vodafone package I have now with my Xperia X8 but I want to get an iPhone 4 and that only comes with a micro sim and please correct me if I am wrong but from what I browsed I get the impression micro sims are either only available on contract or for 99c per day on VF.

    Thanks

NO, micro sims are available as blank micro sims and you simply transfer your current number to it and stay on your current PAYG or bill pay tarrif.

the micro sim is in no way connected to your tarrif.
you need to do the sums to see if you prefer bill pay or PAYG with a smart phone, as the whole concept of the smart phone, is to use data.

Thanks KCEire - that is what I wanted to hear. All is good so. I did the sums last year when I got my 1st android and VF was the best I could get... So, from what I understand now, if I get a sim-free iPhone (factory unlocked I mean) then I just ring VF up and they will send me a new SIM that is a Micro Sim with the same number etc? if so, thats good. Thanks.

do the following, in this order after you get your iPhone :
    1. go to Vodafone store
    2. ask for blank microsim (tell them you got an iPhone4)
    3. tell them to do a sim swap
    4. after a few mins all calls and texts will come through the micrsim.

I have a sim free iPhone 4 bought from Apple. Just drop into a VF store and they'll transfer your number over to a micro sim for free (as kceire said). No other change required.

im on pay as you go with o2 - with iphone 4. i switched my package from the base 'experience' one to 'experience more' - you top up by 20 a month, you can buy 700mb of data for 9.99 (which is suiting me - i mostly use facebook and email, plus app data) per month so that leaves a tenner left over for calls. because you free any network texts so long as you top up by at least 20 a month.
its important to remember to switch to experience more

but this shows you do not need to have a contract or pay through the nose

yes but i did not want to be tied to a contract - personally ive no use for the calls as im deaf so it works for me.
true the contract option works for some as an easier way to pay for the phone

But you're still paying for a tool, when all the phone companies will give you a brand new replacement, no questions asked, for free...

U can cut ur sim and put it straight into ur new second hand phone .. Witout going to the shop .. I don't know about you but I'm after convincing myself here .. I'm off to buy one =)

Why not get a new one? Whats the downside? You don't change your bill/package, it doesn't matter if you're PAYG or bill.

All they do is give you a nice new microsim and it works like your old one (only its newerand will last longer)
