o2 modem install wizard wont install fully

Not very techically minded so hope I explain this properly.I have the old E270 O2 mobile broadband modem which was working fine on my PC up until today. It works fine on girlfriends laptop. When I plug it in,it loads up but the O2 icon doesn't show on desktop. So I went into My Computer, found it there, clicked on the setup.exe file(which worked before). But now it takes me through the first 3 step, says the destination folder is C:\Program Files\O2\O2 Broadband USB Modem\O2 Broadband,I click install,it loads for about 5 seconds then this appears-

Cannot copy files to C:\Program Files\O2\O2 Broadband USB Modem\O2 Broadband, please make sure the file is not currently in use.Close any programs that might be using the file and try again.

Rang O2 three times today and got no joy, even O2 data support couldn't help, they reckon theres something still hidden down in the C drive. Before I install it I wipe every trace of O2 stuff, that I can see,but still same message. The modem is fine cos it works on laptop so I'm confused.Pretty annoying cos I need to get into my PC.Anyone got any ideas?

PS-I did try a different destination,it loads but wont allow me to type in my PIN number

Try running CCleaner---->Restart Computer---->Turn off Firewall
    >Install O2.

Uninstall the modem as normal (via Control Panel) and then browse to Program Files and delete the Huawei or Huawei Modem folder . When you've done that there's no harm in running Ccleaner to clear temp files . Avoid installing any toolbars etc that might be bundled with Ccleaner btw .

I'm not guaranteeing that will sort the problem but I find that the Huawei folder from a previous installation is often an issue when installing 3G modems .

CCleaner after you delete O2, yea.

Worked for me once, turning off comodo firewall worked another time.

Still no joy!Had removed all traces of Huawei Modem previously.Used laptop to download Ccleaner(free version) to USB stick, ran Ccleaner on PC,restarted PC,tried to connect to O2-same error message as above.Suspended Avira and threatfire-still no joy.

What next?Very confusing as its working fine on laptop.

Forget about the o2 software if it's giving you that much trouble.

Set up a new dial up connection using the O2 modem and dialing the number *99# When set up dial the connection.

This will get you online instead of using that annoying software. Only downside is it doesn't record your usage.

    Use the steps here:

But in step 5 the phone number for you is just *99# and leave the username and password both blank.

Rackstar-I did all that but when I hit connect this pops up

error 797-A connection to the remote computer could not be established because the modem was not found or was busy etc etc.

Am I doing something wrong? That link you sent was for windows 7,I'm using XP but I think I figured out how to create a dial up connection anyway.I used the New Connection Wizard.

Go to the properties of the 'Dial up Connection' in 'Network Connections' and make sure the modem its using is the 'Mobile Broadband Modem (Huawei)'

When I go into properties it says Modem Removed-Huawei etc.But the light is still flashing green on modem.Maybe I didn't set it up properly?

    Edit-Tried it again,now it's saying
    Modem removed-unavailable device(COM1).
    Frustrating!!
