    Hi,

I am about to start the first year of a two year MSc. I have been working for the past year and so have my parents. I am living at home, but will have to move to the other side of the country for this masters.

My parents are fairly senior in their respective jobs, but have 4 dependants. I still think their income will be above the cut off point for any grant?

The main question I am asking is: Is there a certain grant thats awarded when you move across the country distince from the main student grant?

Will I have to apply for two seperate grants?

    Thanks for your help.

There is only one grant scheme available which covers the maintenance grant and the fee grant but if you live more than 45km from the college, then you are eligible for the full maintenance grant of approx. 3000. Your home address is where you live not the rented accommodation you will be living in when in college, so this means you would qualify for the non-adjacent grant providing you meet the income limits. Fees for courses above level 8 i.e post-grad, masters, doctorate are covered up to max of approx 6000. It depends then on the income of your parents but if you are giving up your job this year then your income for last year can be disregarded under change of circumstances and social welfare for this year, if you are getting any would be taken into account and if your parents have reduced hours this year, then their 2011 income details can be submitted together with their 2010 details. Any social welfare benefits they might receive in lieu and any lump sums received in 2010 or 2011 might be averaged out over the number of years worked, so it is very difficult to judge if you qualify or not. There are increases then for 4 or more dependent children and also additional allowance for 2 or more children in college. Please note, you must be progressing i.e. you have not completed a masters already and you are only entitled for grant aid for max of 4 years above level 8 regardless of whether you applied for grant before.
PS, the course must be full time.

Hi, really appreciate that quick reply!

So, I'll fill in the application as normal, and send it off. There is no need to apply for a non-adjacent grant because they are all included in the one application?!

Do they really look at my home address and calculate the distance from where I'm living now to where I'll be in college?

Also, I have a P60 for both me and my ma, and a p21 for my da. Will this be enough?

    Thanks again!

only one application form which covers the maintenance and the fee element.
They will calculate the distance from your home to college, if less than than 45km then the maximun maintenance you can get is about 1200 and you may qualify for fees up to 6270 for postgrad.
You will need a P21 for yourself and another for your mother if you both had P60 incomes last year. If mother and father are jointly assessed, then the one P21 is enough, both of their incomes will be listed on this. All income noted on the P21 will need to be accounted for with back up documentation i.e P60s, certs of interest, social welfare statement if any illness, disability, jobseekers etc was received. Original birth cert for yourself and proof of Irish/EU nationality if not born in Ireland i.e. copy of your passport.
Proof of residency in Ireland for 3 of last 5 years for yourself and offer/acceptance of course will need to be submitted. FA1 course acceptance form to be completed. Any other income i.e. Rental/Disposal of assets etc in 2010 to be submitted.

Just want to clear this up in my head because I never knew about this before. You are only entitled to the grant for a max of 4 years for postgraduate courses? Or is it only 4 years of a grant altogether between undergraduates and postgraduates?
