Rear calipers can seize, some say they burn a lot of oil but I don't really see much of that. They are fairly bullet proof, there are a good few garda ones now with over 300000km and they are ok. try get a zetec at least.

Aren't the garda cars all 2.0?

Don't the 1.8 models have dodgy butterfly valves?

They are in the new Garda Mondeos, the 2.0.
As for butter fly valves, they effected only the early ones and i'd say by now they have all been replaced or blew the engines they went into:pac:

I had 2 1.8 Mondeos of that era. Grand car. Go for the Zetec model, bit more poke and probably better MPG than the LX. Zetec comes standard with Front fogs, alloys, A/c and electric windows front and rear. I put a lot of miles on both mine and only had 1 problem, a water pump failed at 24k.

    Good solid car.
Try and go for a zetec model over the lx. The extra power of the 125 engine over the 110 is noticeable. It should also come with some extras like all electric windows, steering wheel controls for the radio, front fog lights and alloy wheels.

The butterfly valves only affected cars built 2000 to late 2002 when a new intake manifold was introduced. I don't think it was limited to just the 1.8

Make sure it is the Zetec model. It has the 125bhp 1.8 engine. The LX has only 110bhp.

I'd also consider the Mazda 6, can be bought for Mondeo money these days too.

    ok many thanks

when I posted i was worried about the butterfly valves but i have since found out and as stated ^^ it should be ok in the 04 model

the car is the LX , it is spotless 90k miles, tyres about 60%, 12 months, nct

it will cost her €2200, private sale no warranty, I intend to check it out in the morning ( no experience of mondeo hence my query)

bearing in mind she has just finished college, cash isn't exactly hitting her in the face
expected milage would be about 15k pa and if she she gets up to 3 years trouble free, would be happy

she knows tax and fuel costs might be a little high but is willing to balance this out against initial low outlay

    thanks again

i've had a 06lx one since 08 , lovely car , bit hard on petrol , apart from a reg service the only thing i had to get on it was brake pads and new tyres ..
    great family car :)
