Agreed contract but now want to take another offer

I've just recently agreed a contract with a new employer. Contract is signed and returned and start day finalised. However, i had also interviewed with another potential employer at the time.

I've been lucky enough to receive an offer from the 2nd company which I feel is now a better offer than the 1st.

So what should I do now. If I want to accept the 2nd offer what should I expect from the 1st company in response to the news that I want to walk away from the contract.

The financial package is an influencing factor with the 2nd package so could be a possible negotiating point with the 1st company also.

    Any thoughts?

You signed a contract. My guess is you'll have to work your notice period with them. Probably 1 week or 1 month from agreed start date.

Or, you could explain the situation to them and come to a mutual agreement. It's not in their medium/long term benefit to have you start.

Read your contract, usually there is a 4-week grace period where either party can withdraw from the contract.

Just tell the 1st company you got another offer. This isn't that unusual. Contracts aren't usually worth the paper they are written on.

I very much doubt they'd want to both training you so you could work out notice. And remember that during the first 13 weeks they can let you go with no notice period.

    Just tell them.

They'd far rather hear it now than a week after you've started. (It's happened to me: a lad came in on Tuesday of week 2 in the job and said "I've realised that I made a horrible mistake" ... we let him leave almost immediately.)

Have you started work with the first company? If not, I cannot see what the problem is, just contact them and tell them you have had another job offer, thank them for taking the time to interview you and to offer you the job. Be nice, you never know when you might cross paths at some time in the future.
