Out of curiosity does it pose a big risk?

In the case of rear impact in particular, yes they are essential.

Driving would be fine... It's the sudden stopping and potential whiplash if you had an accident that I would be worried about ;)

'd imagine it would be a magnitude worse without headrests to stop your neck overextending backwards..

Personally, I wouldnt be comfortable driving without them..

Rest in this case is short for restraint. With an airbag and belt tensioners they're even more necessary

Depends on your height, but yeah, probably very important to have them. Ideally the top of your head should be level with the top of the head rest to minimise damage to your neck in an accident.

If your one of those people driving around that are so short your head doesn't come above the seat, leading us all to believe it's an astounding driverless car, probably not so important...

I remember a few years back VW were in the sh1tter for their new headrests causing Whiplash. They had to change them on new models released.

Did a google and could only find possibly one of the most random you tube vids of all time. but to quote it.
From 2005.5-2006, VW had active antiwhiplash headrests. From 2007-8, they removed this features. From 2009 and newer, they fixed the headrests forward. See myturbodiesel.com for more info on VW and Audi TDI.

This was with cars WITH headrests.... Imagine what would happen without. I assume your head would bounce back un stopped and potentially break your neck.... Or break the nose of the back passenger heading toward you.... if not worse.
