Sorry if this is the wrong place. I am currently entering into my third year of college. It is a level 8 degree in the National College of Ireland (BA honours in Accounting). I know it ain't a great college but I really wanted to do accountancy and I just couldn't get the points to go to any other college such as DCU. So far I have met all my requirements for my exemptions for doing my professional exams. But over the last few weeks I have been really worrying about what exactly happens when I finish college. Do I get a job and continue studying at night for my professional exams or do I get a job in relation in my degree as a trainee and study at night for the exams. Really confused and if anyone can shed the light it would be much appreciated of what actually happens when you finish your degree.

You can get a training contract with an accounting/audit firm that will include time off for class/exams and payment of course fees. Classes can be a combination of evenings, weekends or block release.

If you want to train in a business you can still get a contract that includes time off and payment of classes but you are more likely to have to study in your own time in the evenings or weekends.

Have a look on the jobs, accounting bodies, big firms websites to see who is hiring and when. Generally the bigger accounting firms will recruit in September - November of your final year for trainees who start a few months after you finish college. You have to fill out a form that essentially is a CV. If you are successful you will be called to a recruitment day for interviews. Bigger firms may visit your college but as it is a smaller one they may not - check your college's careers office or the firms websites. If they don't you will have to travel to another college's recruitment day or to their office.

Smaller firms recruit a bit later and more directly - you would find a list of hiring firms on the accounting institutes website and apply directly.

Businesses have their own hiring processes. Look on gradireland or other jobs websites for companies that are hiring.

Don't let the college you are in put you off - make sure you get on top of this quickly as workload in final year can mean deadlines creep up quickly. Each application takes time.
