Every day I read another shocking story about the catholic church in Ireland.

I am at a loss to see why the catholic church still exists at all in Ireland.

What has the catholic church ever done for us .

( could people please speak in real terms , and avoid parables, quotes from the bible, words of saints , Latin dittys, etc)

My own view is that Jesus would be shocked at this group of people claiming to represent him.

Educated the nation, even when it was illegal to for them to do so (hedge schools etc)

Hedge schools werent run by priests though most often.

And infact the RC hierarchy was behind the standardization of education here because it wanted to get rid of the Irish language.

This thread is not about child sexual abuse, Magdalene laundries or the other bad things associated with the RCC. It's about the positive influence the RCC has had in Irish society. Off topic posts get deleted. Flaming earns you an infraction.

Provided health care, consoling services and helped preserved Irish language to modern day (first two personal experience, latter ARAIR). Re eductation, I had never meet a Patrician brother who was in any way violent or ill-tempered (outside a rugby field).
I'd also add, it was monks who created champagne, if this was a good/bad idea the jury is still out on that.
Finally, as the OP reads bad news stories everyday - the OP must really get off to a bad start each morning. :)

    Dear fanny

I created this thread to allow people to express positive views , but was hoping that both sides could be debated.

In the spirit of discussion I would have thought that this would be appropriate.

If people are being censored, then I would prefer for the thread to be locked

Then I suggest that the only course of action is that the thread be locked. It nothing more than a troll magnet.

Now is not a time to be praising the church.

They should be made accountable for the actions they decided to take.

Using tax payers money to pay off rape victims and still sending around collection plates.

Take your head out of your arse!

You read what is selected for you by the Media. The Media reports what sells, Its not objective and their only focus is their own agenda.

For example.. Do you ever hear about the 4,500 Sister that are active in 133 countries continuing the work Mother Teresa started? Working with the poorest of the poor, living a life dedicated to helping others.

Its just one example, many other religious people to the same.

Many Families for example in Opus Dei their their day to day lives practising their faith and trying to be good Christians.

You are not going to find the Media cares about the good works of the Church, it doesn't fit their agenda, it doesn't sell newspapers as its not scandal.

The Catholic Church is all its Members.. Its not the Vatican or the Pope or Bishops & Priests.. Its all of us. And believe me that are many many more good people who do a lot of Good than the small number of evil people that the Media likes to focus on.. I am not saying the Media has it wrong on some issues,, its just they are biased to what they see as a hot story.

The truth is that most of us above a certain age were educated in Catholic run schools, as a child I was treated in a hospital run by nuns, Trocaire is a church charity, do you think it should stop feeding the millions of hungry it tries to feed? The church ( and indeed mostly a few members of the church ) have done bad things, but they have also done a multitude of good things and that should not be forgotten as well.

Oh, please! I'm not Roman Catholic. I'm more than happy to condemn the crimes the church has committed.

You should stop to think why I would think a free for all thread on the RCC is going to descend into a bitter mess.

OK, the thread is locked. I don't know what you expected from this thread raymon, or why you never stopped to consider the likelihood that it would end badly, very quickly.

Time to add all the "you wont allow anti-Catholic comments" to all the counter claims that "I allow anti-Catholic comments".
