Very interesting article, delighted to see ABC Family come out [no pun intended] no top [further pun not implied] :)

    http://www.digitalspy.ie/ustv/news/a333119/abc-family-rated-excellent-for-lgbt-characters.html

ABC Family has been congratulated for its representation of gay, lesbian and transgender characters by the campaign group GLAAD.

The cable network received an 'Excellent' rating in the 's 'Network Responsibility Index', which measures the representation of LGBT people on television shows.

Some 55% of ABC Family's original primetime programming featured "LGBT-inclusive images", earning praise from GLAAD.

GLAAD's senior director of said: " like Pretty Little Liars and Greek have woven gay, lesbian and bisexual characters into their stories in a way that mirrors the diversity of our community and the experiences of younger generations.

"Viewers expect to see television environments that accurately reflect what it's like to be a young adult, and today that includes young adults who happen to be gay."

On the broadcast networks, The CW came top for the second year in a row with 33% of its programming rated as "LGBT-inclusive". It received a 'Good' rating along with Fox, which had a percentage of 29%, and ABC, which had 23%. GLAAD also praised ABC for broadcasting the highest number of "LGBT-inclusive" hours and for the strength of its images.

However, CBS came in last place with a percentage of just 10%. The network received an 'Adequate' rating and "showed the most improvement of any broadcast network", rising from a 'Failing' score last year.

On cable, Showtime, TNT, HBO, Lifetime, AMC and Syfy were all handed 'Good' ratings, while USA improved from 'Failing' to 'Adequate'.

A&E and TBS both received 'Failing' grades for the fourth year in a row and GLAAD also the lack of transgender characters on television, with the exception of TeenNick's Degrassi. TeenNick was not included in the Network Responsibility Index survey.

GLAAD's acting president Mike Thompson said: "As television audiences get to know our community and the common ground that we all share on the screen and in their own lives, acceptance is growing. Inclusive programming is a hit with critics and audiences alike who cheered for Kurt and Blaine's romance on Glee or watched the wedding of Callie and Arizona on Grey's Anatomy."
