A cyclist has died following a collision with a vehicle in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan.

The incident happened at around 10.15pm on the N2 Carrickmacross to Castleblayney Road last night.

The 23-year-old man died when he was struck by a vehicle that failed to stop.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses who travelled that stretch of road between 10pm and 10.30pm to contact Carrickmacross Garda Station on 042-9690190, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800-666111 or any garda station.

    RIP :(

Tragic. Terrible that the ba5tard who killed him didn't even stop. I cannot understand how anyone could drive on and leave someone dying or dead by a roadside.

These are the reports that make husbands and wives worry about letting us out on our bikes....

A death is tragic, a hit and run is murder. Appalling behaviour.

    RIP to the unfortunate cyclists.

    RIP

I believe jail time for hit and run is very short in here, so no, justice will not be served.

RIP condolences to their family & friends!

All these deaths on the road are tragic, some drivers really need give more room when passing cyclists, not saying this was the case here just in general.

That particular stretch of road is massive, very new road straight road with a big hard shoulder on both sides so hard to imagine what happened.

In any sensible country, excuses like "I didn't notice" or "I got scared so I ran" would rightly be reason to double the punishment. Here in Ireland though no doubt they're seen as reasons to take pity on the driver.

It was a small road off the main N2 part. It was reported as that road for geographical reasons.

As a man that knows I can tell you it was on the N2, at the crossroads for Lisdonan/Magheracloone. People shouldn't comment until they know facts
