Im looking for opinions about using VAG specific 5w-30 fully synthetic oil in a 1999 Skoda Octavia Tdi 90bhp....model engine code AGR...

Im using 5w-40 fully synthetic at the moment with excellent results. Would the lighter weight oil be too light for my earlier non PD engine?

Spot on. The 5w 30 is only for newer engines with a DPF.

5w30 synth. 507.00 is the current spec for all pd engines (2000 on) with flexible/longlife service interval
5w40 synth 505.01 is the spec for fixed interval only (and is fine for the op)

5W30 wasn't even heard of in 1999 so definitely stick with the 5W40.

Thanks for all your help lads,
At the moment I have Halfords 5w-40 fully synthetic diesel specific oil- this meets VW 502.00/505.00

To be honest I find VW service interval specs very confusing, I assume this will have to be changed at 6 months or 5 thousand miles?

Next change Im planning on using Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40
Apparently this stuff exceeds VW's highest oil spec requirements, and should be good for ten thousand mile/1 year oil change interval..
