I went back to work today after the long weekend here. I was delighted to get back; I'm excited about my career and see it all as a challenge. It's the first time in my life I've felt like that and it's great.

I used to think that if you worked hard and put in loads of effort it would be rewarded. Ha ha. What rubbish. If you're not there getting stressed and solving problems, someone else will take care of it. No one is irreplaceable and there's more important things than work. Work hard but don't let it take over your life.

My hubby was in that frame of mind, where you had to live to work.
That all changed in an instant when he suffered 6 heart attacks in the space of a few hours..at the grand old age of 39.

Now we are social welfare scrougers (according to many many people who love to point out the flaws in social welfare,in AH)

Most people don't live to work, they work to live unfortunately.

    Don't tell me money's nothing
    Look around, I can't get a job
    But I work to live,
    I don't live to work.

    Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa

    One two three four,
    This is for the dreamer
Move it, do it, lose it,
    I'm home.

I gave up a tech support job to go to university a few years ago, but back then I refused to be a slave to my job. I wouldn't take call-out duty, for example, even though it paid well, because it was being abused by the customers. The people who took that on would work a whole day in the office, then work the whole night dealing with "emergencies" that were rarely real emergencies. I had a choice between money and sleep, and I chose sleep. :o

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

    Every is replaceable.
Yeah, work hard but don't be a martyr as when you leave, well they'll have forgotten you within a few weeks

So if you want to be remembered you better pull off some incredible stunt on your last day so they'll be talking about you for years

Unfortunately that's not the case in the Public Service (frontline) where I work. 2 people retired in my department and have not been replaced.
