Painting wooden ceiling in kitchen

My kitchen has a ceiling of varnished wooden slats, which has not been decorated for many years. I've heard that it should be "washed down" with something like sugar soap? , before it is re-varnished.
Can anyone advise what is the best way to prepare it for re-decoration?
Thanks for any help you can give.

1 wash it all down with sugar soap
2 coat it with BIN primer
3 fill any holes and caulk any gaps
4 sand filler and touch up with BIN primer
5 give two coats of satin.

Colortrend do a lovely waterbased exterior satin, but it can be used inside!

I think he just wants to re-varnish it.
In that case I'd just degrease it with white spirits (or SS if it's really greasy. washing a ceiling is messy work though) quick rub down with medium grit sanding pads and two coats of your chosen finish, gloss will give it the most 'lift', but personally I like the matt finish on wood celiings.

Thank you Wertz and Michael for your comments. Yes, I think it would be best to re-varnish. It would be good to lighten the current finish and from what you say I can do this by choosing a lighter varnish and giving two coats. I also like the matt finish as you say Wertz.

The only way of lightening the shade would be to sand all the varnish back to bare timber. Dont really think there is any other way.

Aye you can darken wood fairly handily but lightening it is a long arduous task. Sanding/stripping it right back and maybe applying something like a liming wax or a light woodwash would be the only way. Pine/deal tends to mellow and darken with time.

[edit] By 'lift', I meant in terms of making it stand out as having being freshly renewed...the shiny factor; not lightening it's shade.
