    Hi all,

wifes car died today, just stalled on the road and wont start again. I scanned with a VAG hand held scanner and the folowing codes were found:

    16684 P0300 Cylinder misfire detected
    16685 P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire
    16686 P0302 Cylinder 2 Misfire
    16687 P0303 Cylinder 3 Misfire
16705 P0321 engine Speed Sensor implausible

I cleared the codes and then tried to start the car again. No joy!!!

Re-scanned and now it only shows:

16705 P0321 engine Speed Sensor implausible

Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong or have any experience of this make and model with the same problem.

    Thanks

The engine speed sensor is the crankshaft sensor, The only way it could give an implausable signal is if the relucter ring(what the sensor reads) was damaged or the sensor its self was faulty and there would be no way for the relucter to be damaged unless its been removed or accessed for some reason.

What the sensor failed, the trigger signal to the coils would have been cut which would have registered the misfires with the ecu.

That would be my theory looking at the faults you registered.

It wouldn't be a common problem with these engines, but wouldn't be unhheard of either.

"We have just done a major service on the car including timing belt and water pump around 800 euro "

....is this someone being 'economical with the truth?

Or is it an attempt to justify the askin price?....

my bad. just read that again.
€800 worth of a service....including timing belt and water pump.

....what else in the service could be worth an extra 'few hundred'?

Depends where it was done, 800 for a timing belt, water pump and full service in a main dealer wouldn't sound out of the ordinary.
