Updating iPhone software

Hey all so I have an iPhone 3gs since shortly after they came out and haven't updated the software since, I think I'm still running 3.1 or something like that. I recently tried to update to the newest version and after a few minutes iTunes would give me an error and leave my phone in recovery mode. I managed to get out of it using tinyumbrella. This was one or two months ago.
Today I attempted to update it again on a different computer and had the exact same result. Does anyone know why I would be getting these errors and why I'm unable to update my phone? It's annoying as so many apps require 4.0+!
    Thanks in advance
