Permanent Jobs in Healthcare

    Hi,

Working in a HSE funded hospital.

Some permanent jobs were handed out today basically based on how long people were there (HR and the unions were consulted supposedly). But a group of us weren't considered, no interviews were done, no internal or external interviews advertised.

While I admire loyalty - I think also it's an unfair system with no consideration to someones credentials. And also its not patient centred, it's employee centred (if you're they're long enough!)

Anyways I am not in union - should I just get out or stay quiet and keep plodding along?

As far as I am aware, an employer is obliged to make you permanent (or as good as, offer you an open ended contract) once you have been employed by them for 4 years on fixed term contracts. It could have been that those made permanent met this criteria and your employers had no choice but to make them permanent. As far as I know, they would not have to go through an interview process either as they've already worked there for 4 years and have obviously satisfied the requirements of the the job and successfully completed any probationary period during their time there.

Maybe this isn't the case, but you'd have to give us a bit more info before we could provide any other suggestions

OP - the HSE and indeed the Health Service in general is not patient centred , staff needs come first and foremost and have always done so. I worked in the HSE and have numerous examples of the type of thing you've mentioned.
Pointless going to your union btw

OP, have you ever done an interview for permanency or been panelled? I did it years ago and was panelled but nothing ever happened so when my contract was due to expire I loosely said in conversation that I was going travelling.. Two days later I was permanent.. Send emails to the relevant personnel depts (within your hops and in Kells) and also mention to your supervisor or line manager

    Thanks for replies!

So the people in question haven't been on fixed term contracts for 4 years. Two of them less than 3 years. And the other two barely over one year.

Interviews for the basic positions took place on a permanent basis last year- the two people who got the basic perm positions are not on this panel and did not interview for it. They are however working there less than 3 years.

The other two positions are more senior and were interviewed on a temporary basis last year. Definitely not permanent.

Since I posted yesterday I've kind of decided that this organisation is not the right one for progression of my career and this is perhaps a sign there is better out there for me. A little frustrating though as it's not a fair system!

    Thanks again!
