When the plane's landing the air hostesses are given the seemingly crucial task of ensuring that every blind on the plane is rolled up....

    Why is this!?

Incase the plane crashes so that the emergancy services can see in.

Similar reasons for the lights being dimmed during take off and landing for nighttime flights, so that your eyes can ajust to darkened conditions, again incase of a crash.

I think it is because if they are down, when the plane is landing they are gonna make a huge racket, coz its plastic rattling off plastic.

I thought that was to save power, no?

To allow quick adjustment to changes in light in case the plane crashes, so the passengers can escape faster without being blinded, the same reason they turn off all cabin lighting.

It also helps emergency services get in faster, as mentioned above
